It's really hard to miss the poor guy and his unease, as large as he's become. Pao-lin will run up right beside him, calling out:]

Mac? Is everything all right? [It's kind of a stupid question to ask, considering how it looks like they're in another experiment (already? The previous one felt it was just last week!), but it's as good a greeting as any.]

Pixy Stix are great! They're kinda sour, so you make a face like this when you're eating them [she scrunches her face up to demonstrate] but then when they melt in your mouth, they're pretty sweet!

Yeah, I know whatchya mean... it ain't really my kind a' thing. Ain't sure why. Maybe 'cause it's jus' a whole lot a' sugar with some flavor. Like, if I wanted that, I could, iunno, eat a whole lot a' packets a' sugar or somethin'. [He can't help chuckling.] ...No offense or nothin'.

Iunno... Guess it's almost like one a' those things where y'hate eatin' broccoli an' then y'have it when you's older, an' y'realize it ain't too bad. Except, uh, backwards. [He cracks another simpering grin, grateful for her company.]

Nah. I was one a' those kids who'd eat everythin' else an' push that stuff around the plate. [His eyes soften at the memory.] Ma'd still make me eat 'em though, a' course.

Aww, vegetables are delicious! I'd always eat the peas fresh from my mom's garden on our balcony. [The family garden, small as it was, was one of the things Pao-lin missed about Hong Kong. With Natasha's permission, Pao-lin had started up a container garden in their apartment, but she had a tendency to forget about watering the poor plants.]

Wow... a garden on a balcony? [His tone holds astonishment.] Never had nothin' like that. We only had peas in the bag, yeah? The ones y'stick in the freezer. Those ain't bad.

Frozen vegetables are okay as long as you cook them right, but I think it's a lot better if you can get them fresh!

Mm-hmm! We had a planting box that hung off the railing of the balcony, along with a few large pots of things like tomatoes and stuff. We also had flowers, too! Mama liked that sort of thing.
