Night of the 27th

[Okay, technically more like past midnight and before sunrise on the 28th.

Shikamaru's been doing a pretty awesome job of avoiding the urge to put on any mask that's come his way so far. Observing the madness going on in the village, it just seemed like a troublesome idea. Avoiding people wearing them seemed smart too.

Tonight, though, after a conversation that technically hasn't happened yet with Albert, Shikamaru is on his way to the barracks for some important business. Naturally, he's taking the ninja route and hopping through trees/off of buildings because that's like. Way cooler.]

[STALKING.

See, one Melaka Fray is also a building hopper, and also something of a stalker right now due to her ANBU Mask. It's pretty easy for her to keep pace actually. Not quite as quietly, but hey. Super strength and reflexes of doing this all her life. She's just used to doing this where A) no one else really can and B) on concrete]

[Given all the weirdness going on, Shikamaru is being extra cautious this week. That's actually why he went the tree route - most people in Luceti, he imagines aren't as mobile through them as he is.

So it's the noise that tips him off, eventually. At first he reasoned it could've been an animal, but too many sounds; too heavy for critter feet. He comes to an abrupt stop before leaping up. Up into higher branches, into a good spot to conceal himself, and to hopefully get a better view of things.]

[Her prey exited her immediate view. Melaka pauses in the low branches, looking around. Trees are not her thing though, and particularly through this mask she can't get a good grasp of where the ninja went]

[Shikamaru will have a pretty good view, though. If he's able to spot her lurking there in the shadows, though he can't see the mask from this angle. He stays still, silent, waiting to see what the person following him will do.]

[And... there is a slight glint. Okay. She goes to step up a bit more, carefully climbing some branches all silent like]

[He can make out the form of a person now, especially as she climbs closer. Definitely serious about following him. Shikamaru slides a kunai into his sleeve.

But if she's climbing up, it's not long before that mask is visible. The hell?

For an instant, he's reminded of home. Not that he sees a lot of the ANBU, or that he particularly cares to, so the homesick pang that comes from that of all things is surprising.

Enough so that it takes him a second to figure that this has to be a person from the village, and not Konoha. If they were really ANBU, he'd never have known he was being tailed in the first place.
