So it wasn't going to end peacefully. Shit.

Riku felt Naminé scurry behind him and altered his position to shield her better, half relieved that she was obviously going to stay out of the fray and half worried that she would hamper his maneuverability. His right hand cupped around the space where his sword would appear, but like Sephiroth, he didn't draw. Not yet.

"Listen," he said in a low hiss, "You don't know what's going on here. Neither do I, but I'd be willing to bet Axel didn't kidnap your friend just for the hell of it. The guy pulling his strings..." Riku's lips press together at the thought of the enigmatic DiZ. "Look, you know I rescued your friend. I'm not too keen on Axel right now. But if we handed him over to you--presuming that we could--a lot of shit that would go down that I don't want to deal with." And that I don't want Naminé to have to deal with, he added silently. Not that Sephiroth needed to know that ( ... )

Sephiroth was aware, in a peripheral sort of way, that Naminé had edged behind her friend, but most of his attention was on Riku - after all, Naminé wasn't the dangerous one. On one level, he was glad she wasn't going to get in the way; on another, her move behind Riku concerned him, because it suggested she believed he COULD protect her, despite his blindness...which meant that Riku's handicap might not hinder him as much as Sephiroth would have believed. An unsettling thought to keep in mind...

Fortunately Sephiroth was a rational and above all logical man, so he waited patiently to hear Riku out. Not that the man gave him any news he particularly wanted to hear... The man pulling Axel's strings... Oh, THAT sounded fantastic.

...Actually, that sounded familiarHe forced himself to relax - slightly. Not that he necessarily BELIEVED what Riku was saying, of course; but if Sephiroth could be persuaded to believe that it was true(and, in deference to Zack's vote of confidence to Riku, he was willing to be persuaded), then it sounded as ( ... )

Luckily, neither of them didn't seem extremely interested in picking a fight, as evidenced by the tense discussion that was hanging in the air. Unfortunately, the discussion didn't seem to be heading in a good direction. Sephiroth was still asking for answers that neither Naminé nor Riku could give -- at least, answers that would make some coherent sense.

All of the sudden, Naminé felt an overwhelming sense of guilt, like this situation was all her fault. Which, in a way, it was. She shouldn't have said Axel's name. She shouldn't have stopped to laugh at Sephiroth and Reno. In fact, she was starting to regret her decision of even asking Riku if she could accompany him to Traverse Town. If only she knew all the trouble she would cause...

It almost made her want to speak up and offer to answer Sephiroth's question, but in doing so, she would just make things worse. She didn't even have a good answer. She didn't even have an answer ( ... )

Selphie had been wandering for a little while, half looking for someone resembling the man Reno had mentioned to her, half exploring Traverse Town.

So it was inevitable that she stumbled upon this trio that seemed to be locked in a heated conversation.

The first person she noticed was the man standing by himself with long, platinum hair. Maybe that's the man Reno was talking about? I got my hopes up for nothing, then. He looks older than Riku would be. she thought somewhat disappointedly to herself.

Then she noticed the two people on the other side; sure enough, one of them had the same color hair. And his was definitely a closer resemblance to Riku. However, that was the only thing that Selphie found familiar right off the bat. Still, she felt her heartbeat quicken ever so slightly as she stopped in her tracks, unsure of what to do.

In what seemed like the miracle to end all miracles, Naminé noticed a new person join the fray. A new girl, actually. She curiously peeked at her, looking a little comical, but Naminé was actually just stupefied that she knew this girl!

Well, sort of. They haven't met, but although she seemed older, Naminé could still slightly recognize her. Could she be...?

Her mouth opened and closed again, almost as if she wanted to say something and alert Riku of the girl's presence (especially since she was looking straight at them), but no doubt he had already detected her coming in. Besides, Naminé may have had a flawless memory, but things still changed and that included people as well.

Besides, she didn't want to put the girl in any danger by pointing her out. That would just implicate her as well and... well, that just wouldn't be a nice thing to do!
