I totally get what you mean! I've been recently re-reading the unabridged versions of some classic books that I read as abridged versions when I was a kid. And you're right, it's a whole new ball game compared to modern literature.
I really wish I had more time to read though. I already have tons of reading for school and sometimes I end up not being able to read other things :(
Have not read Crime and Punishment yet but I definitely must read it one day. Also, I am trying to find time to read "A Dance to the Music of Time" which is a 12 book series, but I think I have to wait till I finish my university studies before I try that XD
I've actually been able to combine school reading with leisure reading a lot this semester, mainly because my teachers are always so pleasantly surprised when someone wants to read Dickens or Voltaire etc.. Can't you manipulate yours a little bit? :) Or is it specific required reading getting in the way?
Yes, yes you must! "Crime and Punishment" is FANTASTIC! It was a very long time since a book actually made my heart race from fright, but that one did. Never heard of "A Dance to the Music of Time", but it sounds like I should have... Care to share details? :)
Lucky you! I can't exactly change mine cos I'm majoring in writing, and specific reading is required :/ but I try to use my favourite pieces whenever possible, like for literature reviews or creative pieces that we have free choice for. I always wished they'd put in some Dumas or Verne; I love Dumas' works and I've read the whole Musketeer series over and over again. Someday I hope to read the original French versions when my French is good enough. Unfortunately with only high-school level French, it's not possible.
I am so borrowing Crime and Punishment when I get back to SGP at the end of the year. Three months should be enough to finish that book.
I haven't read ADTTMOT yet, because it's 12 books, but I chanced upon it because it's apparently on Time Magazine's list of 100 books to read before you die. It's apparently pretty epic because it spans so many years in 12 books. I'll probably try the first one and see how it goes. If it's too boring or not worth reading then I'll call it quits :X
Oh, I see! Too bad. :/ I've never read either Dumas or Verne (shame on me!), but I have a few books piled up by my bed where I think some of their works can be found and read in the summer when I have time. I'll be happy enough if I can read them in English, to be honest, never mind French! It'd be very impressive if you did, 'cause my French never got further than the very basics.
Yessss, do it! :D Three months is enough to both read it and weep for 2½ months that it's over! xD
And I shall trust your judgement on the first book to see if I should read it too. Perfect solution is perfect. ;)
