It's not just Captain Scarlet either - there are hints of Angel the Series, and possibly Firefly too...
He would be a great Tad. Indeed, he will be since he just became one in one of my fics, lol!
I deny the existence of CoE, it never happened so MD couldn't have happened either - they're the result of Jack eating too much cheese at night. Oh, and in my world Martha saved Owen when he was shot and then Owen saved Tosh. Characters are much more useful alive.
I can't come up with a convincing way for Jack and Ianto to become parents. Nothing that hasn't been done already, that is. I'm off to find your take on it.
I rather like dead Owen: he seemed to grasp life more when he didn't have it. He made a nice counterpoint to Jack having far too much and therefore letting life itself slip though his fingers. I'm sure there could be a way to fix Exit Wounds though, and keep Tosh alive and Owen, um, not dead dead.
One of the early episodes had Angel talking to a cop in a bar, then there's the whole brooding on rooftops thing, and the seeking redemption theme, and the immortality that was gifted on them by a petite blonde, and the underground lair, and the job they do (P.I. protecting humans from demons Vs Alien hunter protecting humans from aliens). I'm sure I could think of more if I tried, that's just the ones that come immediately to mind.
Well, mine is just a snippet that followed on from a few drabbles of Jack having pregnancy cravings, so I haven't done anything that hasn't been done before. I'm not exactly innovative or avant-garde ;)
Some excellent points. I never really drew the parallels before because I always saw Jack as being more like the Doctor than either of them would care to admit.
I think Jack modelled himself on the Doctor as a kind of tribute, wanting to be like the man who turned his life around. Before that, he was simply a devil-may-care conman, dashing and fun but not terribly trustworthy. I don't think he has any illusions about the man he used to be, he certainly doesn't seem proud of his past, but the Doctor gave him the opportunity to be a better man and Jack grabbed it with both hands.
There's things he doesn't like about the Doctor, though (like being abandoned, called 'wrong' and that whole thing with the Master as he was dying, just as a few examples). But Jack's like that too in a way, and I think he knows it and doesn't like that about himself.
He is a better man now than he was in 'The Empty Child', certainly, because that's what the Doctor does. But they see elements of themselves in each other, and that's why they could never travel together again.
Plus, could you imagine Jack's reaction to finding out that Idris had existed?
Oh no, my brain went to the bad place - I was thinking it would be similar to Amy's, then I had visions of Amy meeting Jack at some point. Or, worse (?), Amy, Jack and River.
I have a soft spot for Ianto bemg a parent and have managed several works of different senerios. Jack too..I think he would be an awesome parent if given the chance.
Could you imagine having Jack as your dad? You'd end up with so many hang-ups about sex because of how much he overshares, you'd never make him a grandparent!

It didn't feel like a rant, if it makes you feel any better :)
You're right about Gwen - she was the most awful character, and how she got away with it is beyond me (although I wonder if Jack liked knowing there was someone who knew his secret).
You've hit the nail on the head with Ianto, I think. He reacted so badly to Tosh's stories about the real Captain Harkness, that it's the only explanation. Clearly Ianto already loved Jack at that point, and he would have felt betrayed himself. Since he believed he would be helping by opening the rift, it just made it that little bit easier to betray Jack again. I don't think he expected Owen to shoot Jack, though - he clearly didn't want things to go that far.
End of Days has never been one of my favourites. Abaddon was just terrible, although I've always liked that Jack went up against him, really not knowing if he would actually come back alive or not.

Thanks for saying so. I just hate Gwen.
I also believe Ianto loved Jack at that point and yes truly didn't expect Owen to shoot Jack. I kind of think Ianto and Tosh just thought it would open enough to suck things back, then close again.
I'd like you view on why Jack took just Gwen with him. My opinion is she was the only one that was selfish enough to let him go alone. Tosh is too kind to, Owen to much the doctor and of course Ianto would want to die with him. Therefore just Gwen.

To be honest, I'd never really worked it out in my head - I've hated that from the very first time I saw it. I think you might be right, because I really can't see it any other way. You're absolutely right about the others.
