The day hadn't started out well. Scotty had still been not-quite-hiding in the engine room, until the community had decided to take over his computer and not let him leave until he'd seen that blasted secrets post. At first he'd been annoyed, then mildly embarrassed that someone had apparently taken enough notice of his social life to think it ( Read more... )

The information they'd been able to gather on how Drama Drama Duck operated was fascinating but frustratingly inconclusive. It was an unprecedented communications network, one she was excited to have access to, but they still didn't really understand how it worked. It amazed her a little that they'd been receiving visitors from alternate times and dimensions and most of the crew was none the wiser, but it wasn't all that unusual for the Enterprise to encounter the unprecedented. She was mulling this over and slowly working her way through a grilled cheese sandwich and a bowl of tomato soup when she spotted Scotty. She smiled and waved as he walked over, looking unbelievably cheerful even though he'd seemed a little down the last few days. She'd actually planned to go looking for him to see if anything was wrong. "Hi Scotty," she said warmly. "This certainly is a surprise. Both of us actually eating dinner at a reasonable time? It's almost unheard of."

"Aye, an' someone ought tae call the ship's historian tae make a note o' it," he replied brightly, "because I doubt it'll happen again, in our lifetimes." He'd gone with some sort of chicken and vegetable dish for dinner, on the basis that if he didn't eat at least something green, he'd probably be due for some eyebrowing from McCoy. "How've you been? Community givin' you any trouble?"

"Probably not, considering it's completely unprecedented." She laughed and ate another spoonful of soup, glad to be having dinner with a friend and very glad to see him in such high spirits. "Not really. It certainly takes some getting used to, and I have to be careful about where the computer screen is pointed, but it's really an incredible chance to communicate with people across dimensions, not to mention a fascinating piece of technology. I wish I could figure out how it works..." She shook off the thought and smiled at him thoughtfully. "You're certainly in a good mood..." She didn't add, compared to the last few days.

"Believe me, love, all o' us wish we could figure out how it works. O' course, if I can just figure out how tae get the transporters tae send a signal across dimensions, that'll be good enough for me." He knew that Uhura - and probably the rest of the crew - had to be at least a little curious as to why he'd retreated to the depths of the engine room for a few days, and her observation about his mood only confirmed that thought. "Aye, an' let me guess. A day longer in hidin' an' you'd have dragged me out an' not taken no for an answer."
