Dean scrubbed at his face in frustration as the words stopped making sense, blurring across the page and taunting him with their nonsensical presence. He made a grab for the bottle beside him, only to find it empty. With a growl, he launched it across the room and flinched at the sound of the glass shattering against the far wall of the library. God, Claire was going to be pissed at him for making a mess.
Only she wasn't, was she? She was the reason he was holed up in Bobby's musty old cabin in the first place, pouring over recalcitrant books, trying to find a way to ice his own brother. Because every time he closed his eyes, he could see Sam's face twisted into an unholy smile as he buried his blade in Claire's tiny body; the look of triumph on his face as he saw that Dean and Castiel had borne witness, bursting in through the doors at the last moment; that ridiculous white suit still spotless as the devil disappeared in a wing-beat, leaving Claire bleeding to death on the floor on the church.
And if it wasn't Sam's face being used by the devil that was haunting Dean's nightmares, it was the image of Castiel cradling Claire to his chest as she struggled to take her last few breaths, Cas begging her not to die, not to leave him alone again. But the most heart-breaking thing, for Dean, was the two fingers pressed to Claire's forehead, Cas desperately trying to heal her as he once would have been able to.
Cas has lost everything to this damn apocalypse. Dean had too, but Cas had had more to lose in the first place.
And that was why the devil needed to die. And that meant killing Sam too, but Sam had signed his own death warrant when he said yes. And Dean was going to have to be the one to do it. But that was okay, because Sam was gone. He was probably the drooling shell that Donnie Finnerman had been. Which meant that Dean has nothing left to lose any more either.
He turned back to Claire's well-catalogued and sorted books and made the words behave for him, to help him reproduce the Colt so that he could kill the devil.
