Chapter 3: Shinra HQ in Gongaga

Jun 11, 2010 15:52

The power is out, but Gongaga is far from dark and quiet. Too close for comfort, the fires consuming the power generator rage. A section of the burning building explodes, and those inside the Shinra HQ would have to be quite immensely focused to not take notice of rattling windows. Something must be done, and quickly. Fortunately, cell phones ( Read more... )

Surprise would be the least description of what Rufus felt as the lights went out and flames from the nearby power plant became visible outside his window. He jumped up from his desk as Dark Nation growled futilely at the wall as it shook under the shock of an explosion. First things first, they needed to--

Beeeeeeep! Rufus immediately grabbed his phone out of his pocket to confirm a sinking suspicion. That was the sound that would be telling him to recharge the battery. Provided they had power. He fixed the phone with a look that should have been capable of melting it.

"Great," he muttered, a second explosion reminding him that he had been in the process of getting farther away from that window. He grabbed Dark Nation's collar and gave it a tug to wrest the animal's attention away from the wall. "Come on, we're getting out of here." With Dark Nation at his heels, he moved to the hallway (which seemed slightly more secure, if only for a lack of outside windows) and dialed Tseng's number. Thankfully, the Turk picked up ( ... )

Rufus simply sat staring out the window as Tseng made his call, his expression remarkably blank. This was one situation he very much had not wanted to turn out like he had expected, and Laylee having been killed only added to the list of things going very badly.

Dark Nation, who had been sitting rather quietly by Rufus' feet since they'd taken off, apparently sensed that his master was upset, took the opportunity to nuzzle Rufus' leg. A bit startled by the action, the President blinked and looked down to find dark eyes peering back up at him. He forced a very small attempt at a smile before turning his attention back to the window.

The situation could be worse, certainly. There was something to be said for the simple fact that Dark Nation was curled up at Rufus' feet, and that Tseng was sitting next to him. And from what he knew, a very significant portion of his employees in Gongaga had survived. But even so ( ... )

"As soon as we land, I'll send one team to go see what they can retrieve and have the personnel transported to Junon." Tseng was silent for a moment, his expression unreadable. "...Elena should report in soon. She'll find a way to follow us."

Laylee's death was an unexpected side effect of the situation and Tseng would deal with the necessary arrangements for her while he was taking care of the details of the cleanup. "Is there an estimate of how many are dead, aside from her?"

"Uncertain, at present. Or at least the guard I was talking to wasn't sure." An uncomfortably high number, Rufus would imagine. "He was clearly more focused on the people who were still alive. I'd say his priorities were correct, wouldn't you?" He glanced toward Tseng, then back to the window.

"I doubt that anyone who was in the power plant itself survived. I would assume the same of anyone who attempted to stop Sephiroth and whoever was with him."

Tseng was silent for several moments after that, his expression carefully blank as he stared out the window.

"She had no reason to be there and she'd know better than to challenge Sephiroth directly." He answered finally before glancing at Rufus. "When she's able, she'll contact me somehow. We're not that easy to kill."

"I don't doubt it," he responded, after a brief pause, in a tone that anyone other than unfortunately possibly Tseng wouldn't be able to tell wasn't 100% confident. Elena shouldn't have been in the power plant, but she should have been somewhere in the area. Why hadn't they heard from her? He couldn't fault what Tseng had said, but the question remained. For now, he chose to avoid actually assuming the worst. Thankfully he didn't have to worry about Reno or Rude having been caught in that mess somehow. Which brought him to a different thought.

"We should contact the research teams and inform them that when they return, it won't be to Gongaga."

"I was going to contact them once we were in Junon but I can do it now, if you'd prefer to know their status."

Rufus shook his head. "It can wait, at least until we both have functioning phones. I'd rather have the line open for more immediately important calls, right now." That, and the battery on the phone they were using wasn't going to last forever, either, particularly when they had been using it more or less constantly.
