A Letter to Louis Plumb -- April 19th 1891

Apr 19, 2011 17:18

[this has been written on the stationary that Scarlet gave them, and it arrives in a cream-coloured, double sealed envelope from Haverhill, Suffolk]

Dear Mr. Louis Plumb,

I have just arrived, and already my brother-in-law and myself have been working to locate your mother in order to deliver the letter. It is strange working with him on a case again, and out of sorts that we are missing our third party member. [a large ink blot] My late-partner that is. [another blot] We are currently trying to work-out contacts that we can trust enough to deliver such an important and personal letter.

But this should be a proper letter, with hope.

My nephew, Robert, got a dog for his birthday last year which he has named 'Hattie'. She is a great, big creature, around the same size that he is. Robin has just informed me that she is a 'Pyrenean Mountain Dog'. I am sure that you will be able to find illustrations or a cabinet card of one, but she is light-coloured and very fluffy. Very thick fur!

I really do wonder if Manisha could come up here. Perhaps not to Haverhill, but Above ground. I also plan to ask the Tiger Keeper if he knows anything about her when I see him next. My niece, Flora really loves animals and I wish that her and Manisha could meet. Also while mentioning your shopkeeper, I have written Uncle to ask if he could procure some dried catmint for me. I really hope that she will like it if I manage to bring some back.

That 'putt putt' boat has been claimed by Robin. And he has plans to try it in a duckpond tomorrow. He thinks that it is a brilliant contraption, and reading over my shoulder now has started going on about it again. [a line where they have suddenly turned away from him] I also gave Elise those flowers. She adores them, and since she has not been able to get out to see many of the new blooms, she has set it on her bedside table. I think just seeing them has perked her up some.

But the mail cart has arrived, and if this has hope of being received by you as soon as it can, then I had better seal this and send it off. Please send my regards to Manisha and perhaps Mrs. Williams if you should have tea with her before I return.
