A real low blow

Having seen a bass flute in my recent issue of PMEA magazine, I went to Google images to show my curious daughter how frickin' cool they are. I was then trumped, double trumped, and triple trumped by what I saw. At a site called Contrabass.com, there are oodles of subsonic instrumental debauchery that fascinated me. The site is horribly put ( Read more... )

At a certain point, it's time to admit that the flutemakers are just indulging themselves. All you hear with those giant flutes is the vibrato of the breathing.

Yeah, but it's sex-ehh indulging. And I would have to give the benefit of the doubt that a hyperbass doubling a bass flute would start to rattle the rafters, done correctly.

Well, if you're really stuck on the darned things, I'll direct you hither. Don't ask how many takes it took.

That's purty. Real purty. Thanks! So, what I will ask is: how close were you to scrapping the whole idea? :-)

Too frickin' cool is right. I loooooooove bass instruments. Played the bass clarinet in high school and college, and my dream is that someone rich will buy me a serpent someday (since I can't justify buying it for myself). Thanks for the link!

If you find such a person, can you please tell him go buy me a hurdy gurdy while he's at it?

These bassaflutes look really grim.

Really?? I played in junior high. I loved practicing the low E on that sucker. Mind you, the dog and cat had other opinions. But I didn't care.

When I win the frickin' lottery, I'll get us both serpents.

Hey, I played the little solo at the start of the Pines of Rome (or was it the Pines of the Appian Way?) on the bass clarinet in college. :-)

I even marched with that bastard in high school, though it nearly killed my neck.

When I win the frickin' lottery, I'll get us both serpents.

Then we'd just need two other people with serpents and we could have us a quartet!

Wow. That is an amazing set of instruments. Just... wow.

Oh, and if you need a good way to help her get a sense of scale they have (or used to have, I suppose... I haven't checked in a while)... anyway, they had a bass flute displayed in the small jazz/music museum-like room on the main floor of the Cathedral. It's around the other side from where the dance event was last month.
