Not really doing the year in review thing -- that tends to be a very personal thing for me. This year wasn't the best on record, though, and I'm sincerely hoping that 2009 is better.
I made a goal in the second half of 2008 to read more books, period. All my reading in 07 ended up being online or comics. wiredferret sent me a few Wen Spencer books, and then I went on an Agatha Christie kick, and then I read about Hunter Thompson . . . It's nice. :)
I have this huge pile of books on my "to read" pile. I put them all away, though, because the sheer size of the pile is daunting. Instead, I have one single book out, which I can put down and switch out if it turns out I don't actually care for it.
For a while I was in a book club, pledged to read a book a month, but that started feeling like "work" instead of "play" and I am all about playing when I'm not working.
If I shelve it with the masses, I forget it. So I made a small shelf, right next to my computer and workbag, of to-be-read. If the shelf is full, I shan't buy more books until I read some of the things on it.
This is, to my surprise, working. The books aren't languishing.
I tried this last year. It did *not* work for me. I ended up just not reading anything. So -- down to a single book and I actually did pick it up last night and read some.
No -- because the book club felt like a job at one point, made me unhappy. I like just being able to pick up something and read it, without a deadline. Thanks for the offer though!
Those seem like reasonable goals. The eating and exercise thing, yeah, that's fundamental, innit? The older I get the more obviously not optional that becomes.
I know! I am not happy that I can't just eat junk, laze around, and be healthy anymore. I have to work at it. But I've at least come to the point that I'd rather work at it and be healthy, than not be healthy.
And don't be tempted to underestimate either the value or the difficulty of coming to that point. Debby's ER is full of people who don't manage it. :-/
I'm glad you're doing better, and I hope 2009 winds up full to the bursting point with blessings for you.
