Big wheels keep on turning

I’ve been far too busy the last week plus. I owe emails and work to people (like Kate) and I owe writing time to myself. Once I recover.

Last week was the annual conference for the day job. Four days of insanity. This year I tried to be smart. I had purposefully not signed up for as much as usual, giving myself more breaks. Then someone got sick, ( Read more... )

My husband's game company put out a multi-platform mobile MMORPG (Pocket Legends), so he has basically one of everything for testing purposes. He thinks the iPad is his, but he's wrong about that. I just let him borrow it back when he really, really needs it at work. :P

He says the Samsung Galaxy tablet is his favorite of the Android ones... it's small enough to fit in his inside coat pocket, and it's got the best screen and the touches mostly work, unlike the other one he has that's a no name brand. He's heard the Viewsonic ones are good as well, but thinks they're larger.

On eBook readers, you really do want to go for something that's not backlit, which a computer screen is, because the eye doesn't want that fatigue. The Kindle is not backlit, but I think the iPad is...

I'm going withe 3G enabled Kindle, not only because of the lack of backlighting, but because the 3G capability is free. You can look at blogs or Wikipedeia and newspapers anywhere, anytime, and there's no subscription.

I can live with the page refresh for that.

Plus, I like the feel of it in my hand better than the others. It's light and grippable.

Leah, it took me a few days to get used to my Kindle, but then I just fell in love with it. I have some vision issues, and I love being able to make the font larger or smaller as needed.

I don't like the back-lighting of the iPad--as reading for more than hour gives me a headache. But I can read for hours on my Kindle as it has no back-lighting. I adjusted very quickly to the "clicking" through the pages.

FWIW, I started out reading on the Kindle app on my iPad before switching to an actual Kindle, and I absolutely hated to push the button to turn the page at first. I loathed it. Once I got into a book and really used to it, though, I found that I like it so much more than the sliding text, and it bothers my RSI a ton less. I find it a smoother read, too, since you don't have to scan over the page to find the starting place the way you do with scrolling text. It feels like you're reading a book, more or less.

Like everyone else has said, too, it is so much easier to read on a Kindle with the e-ink than it is with anything backlit. Going from my iPad to the Kindle was like day and night (ha ha) in terms of eye strain and headaches. I will never read on my iPad again.

As long as you don't have coffee in the shower, I think you could go either way. :)
