I enjoyed this read and found it all very poignant, reminding me as it did of a modest philosophy I proposed to myself some years ago: home is where you are. That way, you can never be homesick

Yes, this. Me too, and that's after staying put long enough for daughter to get to 18 in the house we have lived in since before she was born.
(BTW: Locally I believe we have the opposite problem: locals believing and acting as if their home Borough is shit, and treating it that way too: litter; rudeness; stealing front garden plants; badmouthing the place to the world. The really sad thing is that it doesn't come much better than this. But all of this needs a post of its own.)
