Title: It’s a Good Life if You Don’t Weaken Fandom: Life on Mars Rating: PG Word Count: 1,500 words. Notes: Gen, set in some imaginary time during early S2. Title from the song by The Tragically Hip.
In all honesty, I'm glad they didn't return to this in canon. It's the sort of unresolved detail that fanfiction is perfectly placed to unravel. Ideally with the kind of thoughtfulness and understanding that you've brought to it.
I spent most of the time slightly on edge, fearing a moment where Gene would break under Sam's persitence and admit that he's all eaten up inside about the whole thing. I'm so delighted that you didn't go that way, because I think Gene's reaction would be exactly the way you've depicted it. If Sam could get his head out of his arse for five seconds he'd understand a great deal more about what makes Gene tick!
Bah! I like it when unresolved details turn up in canon, especially because I trust they would have done it deftly. (I still have a lot of faith, me.)
But thank you. Gene's already told Sam a lot more than he'd ever tell anyone else, however I don't think Gene would articulate the feelings of guilt, even if he did feel them (and, in my mind, he does.) Simply admitting that there's something to be packed down is admission enough.
W ow, it's been quite a while since I read LoM fanfic and I'm glad I clicked (can I blame it on the title? I have a weakness for The Hip). I can see this happening, I think you did a marvellous job in writing this. :)
The thing I always liked about LoM was the fact they both acted as mentors for each other at different points. They influenced each other in good and bad ways.

This is going straight into my memories, of course.

I have to admit, I'd always really hoped they'd return to that little bit of Gene's past.
