The second fandom I ever got involved in online was for the Hornblower telemovies starring Ioan Gruffudd. I joined
hh100 (drabbles! yay!) and I was obsessed. Boy, was I obsessed. CoS friends will still make jokes about me and Action Archie. Hornblower was how I fell in love with Philip Glenister - leading me to avidly watch him in everything I could get my hands on (and there's still so much I am missing!) He's the reason I watched Life on Mars.
In short, I owe my new obsession to an old one, and that is why I was compelled to do a cap and caption of Hornblower - "Mutiny" and "Retribution". Spoilers are minimal. This is predominantly Phil Glenister-centric, but also includes Ioan Gruffudd, Jamie Bamber, Paul McGann, Terence Corrigan, Nicholas Jones, David Warner, Sean Gilder, Paul Copley, Robert Lindsay and Gilly Gilchrist. There is a backview of a naked male body (Ioan's) so it's probably Not Safe For Work.
There are 82 caps in this post, each cap is 400 by 300 pixels (so, if you're on a low-speed connection, you may want to go make something to drink and eat.) I have 153 full size caps of 768 by 576 pixels available, with all caps being in a 40mb zip file I'll upload for anyone and I am happy to upload individual fullsize caps if you want specific shots.
So, as I said, I was obsessed with Hornblower. Initially, I was madly in love with Ioan and Jamie. Look at them;
Who wouldn't be?
I also loved Paul McGann.
And then, I saw "Mutiny" and "Retribution" for the second time, and somehow, managed to fall in love with Phil.
And it wasn't just his acting that I liked - although I really am a huge fan because he's just so good.
Really. He's subtle.
No. I found him physically appealing.
Now, this is a little more confusing.
Because Phil? Not so much with the conventionally handsome.
The boy has terrible skin - which was especially set off by the sea air.
And he's cuddly!
Although he truly does have beautiful eyes.
Somehow, I liked all of this about him. And continue to like it.
Yes, you're a sexy bitch, aren't you?
His character, Hobbs, also won me over. He's ambiguously antagonistic!
I love his uniform.
Especially his dorky, dorky hat.
And the pony-tail.
In his spare time, Hobbs eats the heads off Midshipmen.
He teaches Archie how it's done.
Looks can be deceiving.
He's not a sweetheart.
He's a total bastard to darling Wellard, played by Terence Corrigan.
Actually, I'd just like to take this moment to say that Corrigan is one of those actors who you expected to see appearing in everything because he's a good actor and, you know, cute.
But he didn't, exactly. He acts on stage, and I hope he's super popular there, because his television and film career have been non-existent.
Which is a shame, I think.
Because he was very good at playing off of Ioan and Jamie and David and, of course, Phil.
So, okay, back to Phil.
Hobbs.
As I mentioned, Hobbs is antagonistic to our heroes.
Action Archie doesn't really care.
But Horatio is sad.
And the reason Hobbs is a mean grump has to do with his captain.
Captain Sawyer, AKA Captain Crazycakes.
See, Captain Crazycakes isn't acting quite like he normally would, and Hornblower and friends want to relieve him of his duties. But Hobbs is fiercely loyal and this narks him off.
This is one of my favourite scenes. It's so tender.
See, I can't actually dislike Hobbs, even though he's going against our protagonists, because loyalty wins me over every time.
Seriously! It's a huge thing for me.
Hobbs constantly has his Captain's back.
He's his great protector.
In fact, I kind of love Hobbs because of it.
Despite his crispy coating of bastard.
It's reminiscent of the respect Hornblower shows Pellew.
Or Pellew shows Hornblower.
But back to Hobbs.
We have Action Hobbs too! Go in low. Grab the argos.
Yay for Action Hobbs!
He's a fighting machine.
He's strong.
And kind of... elegant in a way.
Admit it. You, too, think Hobbs is made of awesome.
I kind of desperately want Hobbs to stand like this throughout the entire two episodes.
Although, this stance is also cool.
And when Hobbs is actually helping our protagonists?
He rocks majorly.
Now that we've established the coolness of Hobbs. Let's have some nudity.
I have to admit, I couldn't go through this episode and not capture this moment, even though I was concentrating on Phil.
Though - look at Phil in the background. He's not looking at Ioan, he's looking at the water pumpers.
That amuses me.
The whole scene amuses Jamie, Paul and Nicholas.
Doesn't it look like Jamie and Paul are going to join in?
I forgot to mention that Hobbs has a friend in Randall.
They're good friends.
Yes, really.
They spend a lot of time together.
Bad things happen! Rocks fall!
Hobbs is sad.
He and Randall were close like Matthews and Styles are close.
Pure, pure friendship.
Styles and Hobbs do not get along at all.
Styles spits on Hobbs.
Hobbs is sad.
He gets injured at one point.
I want to pet him.
Actually, you should know, Hobbs spends the entire two episodes looking either grumpy or miserable.
Because he's a complex little bugger.
Who is clearly conflicted due to his loyalty.
Yes.
Oh, Hobbs.
Tongue!
We're going to end with the only part of the entire two episodes where Phil even comes close to smiling.
Well, that was fun.
