This is fantastic. Oh, poor Sam. It's so hard to overcome a lifetime habit of smoothing things over... controlling everything.

I love how you describe his 1973. Harsh and raw and full of near-bleeding metaphors. It made me reconsider Sam's thumb-cut in 2006, not as a sign that he can't feel, but as a vivid irruption of 1973 into his carefully controlled life.
