The only way I've found to stop it doing that weird jolting pause between clips when you're previewing the video is to use the cross dissolve transition between clips, if that helps (although that might just be my mac's unique spazzy way or something). But at least iMovie doesn't crash as much as Windows Movie Maker. >.
