Good Omens in Scholarship

Apr 16, 2009 17:24

I apologize for my recently deleted post, I was going slightly mad trying to find the one quote I needed to finish my paper.

Anyway.  I know that most of the time the writing here is fanfic, but I'm curious to see people's reactions to Good Omens being used in scholarly works.  For my "After the Death of God" theology class, we've been given free ( Read more... )

essay, theology, neil gaiman, book discussion

Very interesting and a good read. I personally enjoy Gaiman's theme of gods as anthropomorphic ideas and you've treated the subject nicely. Thank you for sharing.

(iz beta, hope you haven't handed this in yet, I'll just do spelling and maybe a little bit of style...)

the four hose people are War, Death, Famine and Pollution.
--four horse people

each one of the four
--stylistically flows better as 'each of the four'

she sort of god sucked
--(I don't have my copy in front of me, it's being leant out, but...) she sort of got sucked (?)

who brought her believe in Mad Sweeney
--(haven't even read this one, I know, I know, terrible of me...) who brought her belief in Mad Sweeney (?)

Outside of that:
WOW. Really, really, really wow.

Very nicely thought out piece.

You've clearly not only done your reading you've given the topic a lot of thought and drawn some well-considered parallels.

I agree that it needs some editing because there are besides the ones bakaknight mentioned several other grammatical and typographic glitches.

Just to help, here are a few more that jumped out on a read through.

It's well done and deserves the best presentation possible.

>Rather, they are persistent gods-above-gods who exist simply because the idea that they represent exist. <

--"idea" needs to be plural.

>“the story of the girl from Bantry who came to the New World and who brought her believe in Mad Sweeney <

--"belief" instead of believe.

>While these items do not act as a fetish for believers,...<

--"fetish"--needs to be plural

>Furies hounding after Dream for the murder of his son--"after" is unnecessary with "hounding",it stands alone ( ... )

*jaw drops* OMG. This paper was stunning. I am SO JEALOUS that you get to do Gaiman's books! They're so rich and stunning; I always wish that we could do Gaiman's books, like American Gods, for Lit but no such luck. :(

I loved the way you treated each work of Gaiman's so well. However, if I were you I may have given a brief explanation of, say, who the Corinthian and Daniel were, sintead of assuming the marker knows them. Or maybe that's just the way we do it here?

This definitely deserves an A+!

It's actaully really interesting to study texts like these from the standpoint that's religion analysis. Usually literary analysis makes my blood boil, but religious analysis is apparently something else all together, and was an utter joy.

My instructor is familar with the Sandman is actually debating taking a break from finishing his disertation to write an article (although I have NO idea what he's going to be doing it about, exactly.)
