Crowley's Soul Music

Jan 03, 2008 06:03

When Crowley is revealed to have a collection of Soul Music, which is described as being "real Soul Music - James Brown wasn't in it," what is meant by that? Should I read that as "James Brown was a crap artist" or as "this isn't actually soul music as we humans know it" or something else entirely?

Soul music like...not blues. Soul music as in human souls, him being a demon and all.

At least that's my interpretation.

That's what I thought. Creepy, though. Thanks!

Any reasonable collection of "soul music" as we humans know it definitely would have some of the Godfather of Soul in it, so....

It means that "soul music" should be taken a lot more literally. XD (There's a Discworld book by that title too.)

Thanks! And I should really check out the Discworld series...Are they finished? After what happened to Robert Jordan and the Wheel of Time, I'd prefer to avoid WIPs.

Finished? Lord no. But they're not really comparable to WoT, as all the books are complete stand-alone stories and don't have to be read sequentially.

Excellent! Thank you.

As others have said, it's more 'this isn't soul music as humans know it' than anything.
(Personally, I've always thought it was music with rocks in, for all the human-souls theory is probably what the authors meant [esp. seeing as Soul Music came five years later]. But I do like my random crossovers.)

Er, rocks?

It's only sort of literal. Short version: Music with rocks in is basically sentient rock and roll as brought about in a high-magic environment. When it gets loose, Hijinks Ensue.

There are some fans of Soul Music that believe James Brown wasn't a proper Soul artist. I've always taken it to mean that Crowley was one of those fans. :)

You wouldn't happen to know what he's criticised for, incidentally?

I'm afraid I can't remember. I'm sorry. :(
