Part 5 - Canadian

Breakfast at the Railroad Bar and Grill, which is attached to the motel, brings a meal so unremarkable that Sam knows he will be fantasizing about Jack’s Grill forever. Sam’s waffles turn to mush the second the syrup hits them. Dean’s eggs are cold.

;alkjsdf;lkasdjfalkdsjf I love the last scene so much. Dean is trying SO HARD. And Sam wants to try to, for his sake, even though that's not exactly what he wants.

Still love the writing and descriptions. Very cool photos placed throughout.

Oh the poor Deany! I think sometimes he doesn't quite get Sam, you know? But he wants to, it's easy to see that. And yeah, he tries so hard...

I'm so glad you're enjoying the story!

PS I'm glad you like the photos too. I debated putting them in, because I couldn't figure out if they were a distraction or if they helped with the atmosphere or not. Still, it was fun taking them. : D

The photos add a really nice touch, and make the story even more believable. I'm quite impressed you took them all yourself - did you visit all these places for the purpose of the fic, or had you already been there?

Did you road trip through the panhandle recntly? I really like the photos. This case, with the edges of the tragedy worn smooth by time and good intentions, has a very different flavor to it. And I love Dean taking Sam to the art museum, trying to cheer him up.

Yes, I did, actually. I had been through Texas in 2007, on my way back from my folk's place in Florida, and thought that the area was unique. Well, every place is unique, but after driving through central Texas, which is a lot of flatness, Canadian came up and was a little bit different; that dip in the road as it leads to the river made all the difference in the world.

I'm glad you liked the case, it was fun to work with. Poor Virginia!

I was going to wait until I got to the end to comment, but I just had to stop here and mention how much I'm enjoying the sense of place you've created in this fic. I live in Eastern New Mexico, so I'm well familiar with the Texas Panhandle. (I also have an aunt who lives in Puxico, MO, and this is the only time I've ever heard of that tiny town outside the context of her and her nursing home there.)

People really do look after each other out here, in these small towns, and the scene in the diner, with Betty rings really true for me. Nice job.

Well, thank you so much! I tried to get it right, seeing as those little places that are only a blip in the road are where Sam and Dean spend most of their time.

As for Puxico, the fork in the road for my family started there, when Oscar Bond, who lived in a railroad worker shack with the rest of his family, was adopted at the tender age of three and packed off to Chicago, the poor wee thing. : D
