I know a lot of you have webcams and this is probably one of the best places to get advice about them. My SO and I want to get webcams to use with AIM or MSN Messenger and neither of us know anything about them ( Read more... )

Mine cost that much (I'm too cheap to pay for a Logitech cam that costs $50 Canadian) and I find that using it while on MSN gives the best picture. Yahoo pager's cam service is crap; the pic is always grainy no matter what cam you use.

Hope that helps :)

Logitech all the way. Some can be expensive but if you look around, you can find a decently priced one and they last. Mine has fairly good picture quality too, I use it with Yahoo and MSN messenger. :)

First of all, be aware that AIM requires you to have at least XP to use their video feature (i was all ticked off when i realized that because i've only got ME)...

secondly, i bought one of those offbrand cameras for like 20 bucks at circuit city (i forget what it was, and i've since gotten a new one, it was blue is all i remember) and used it for 2 years with no problems...it wasn't perfect, but it did the job and wasn't terrible...two of my friends bought the same one and no one had issues...

**search search search for old webcam i kept just in case my current one breaks**- it says 'micro innovations' on the front, but like i said, i got it a few years ago so i don't know if they even make it anymore

At this point in time, any webcam you find should be fine. I think mine was actually free, it's a few years old.

Also, most people don't know this, but there is most likely a program on your computer called Net Meeting. That generally works better than any of the messenger programs but if either of you are behind a router, that might cause some problems, so be aware of that.

The quality of real time webcam chat usually isn't that good, no matter what. But it'll be good enough to see what you want to see ;)

Net Meeting is great for web cams.

Mine is Logtech, it came from with my computer, as well, and it works great. I think you can buy one similar to it for $15-25.

The higher internet connection speed you have, the higher the quality and faster the load time will be, so keep that in mind, too. When Dustin had his webcam at work (T1 line), I could see him a lot better than when he had it at home (dial-up internet).

Also in Net Meeting, you can draw things. Haha I don't know if you'll ever use that, but it's kind of neat. It's like you're both in Paint at the same time, kind of.

lol, that part is so much fun! Of course, I can't draw on paper to save my life, and doing it on the computer is even worse, but at least we get a few laughs out of it. :-)

I have an intel webcam that works great. This time of year they will start going on sale all over the place so I would just watch for that. I got mine a few years ago and I think it was about $20 on sale. My boyfriend at the time got the same one and they worked great. A lot of people don't like yahoo, but him and I had no problems using it and the picture was super clear.

New meeting is a great program, but we couldn't use it because we were using internet through our campuses.
