Why is it that in movies the bad guys always die?

I guess we, as an audience and society, aren't fully happy until we see the big bad receive the ultimate punishment.

That's a bit scary once you think about it.

i'm thinking here, movies

A lot of the time though, a character who everyone loves dies as well, have you noticed? :O It's kind of an odd dynamic.

But that is a little scary :/ Society in general, though, has always been a little scary.

I think we secretly like seeing people get killed.

It's a really old concept; look back to ancient Greek and Roman mythology. It's full of bad guys dying.

Also beastiality and unrequited love.

It explains the United States (and other countries) penchant for the death penalty. Thankfully, I just read that the Illinois State Bar Association recently voted to do away with capital punishment. (Which, ironically, I used to be in favor of, until I grew up and started reading. Although, I really do believe some bastards need to die, but only if they are 100% proven guilty beyong a reasonable doubt.)

The Departed rocked because in the end, all the good guys get shot, except for one. And the bad guy dies but it's one of the movies where you really, really want him too. And even the remaining good guy isn't really good because he's a bit of a douchebag. And he killed someone. But still.

The whole death penalty thing creeps me out. Not the whole killing thing. Well, yeah, it's creepy, but how hard certain people push for some people to get the death penalty. I don't know, maybe it's because I've never been in such a situation, but even if the person deserves to die hearing people want them to die with such a passion just creeps me out.

I've never seen The Departed. :(

I'll be honest. The guy that raped my sister? I want him dead. The guy that molested me? I want him dead. Child molestors/pedophiles/rapists and some murders I want dead. I believe in rehabilitation but for some people, I think their crimes are so horrendous and ruin so many lives, that you shouldn't have the chance to try and be rehabilitated. I mean, I know first hand how hard it is to overcome something awful like sexual abuse. I was 12 when it happened to me--I can't imagine being 3 or 5 or 8 and being able to deal with something like that. And if a family member does it? That's got to be so hard.

I sort of feel like it makes me an awful person for wishing some people were dead. But at the same time, I feel like they deserve it and that I shouldn't be so ashamed of thinking that way. I don't know. I'm really conflicted on the matter, but I can honestly say that if I ever had the chance to kill Chris Steiner, I would take the chance and not look back. Does that make me horrible?

This is what happens when I comment way past my ( ... )
