I've lost everything. Somehow even though I was ridiculously careful yesterday, I got a pretty nasty virus that proceded to corrupt the lowdown files in my windows, when I logged into Windows this morning I got a "windows has shut down windows explorer to protect your computer" message. In a typical windows virus/malware induced crash- your "files" are still there!
Well- at least untill a recovery cd etc formats the drive- then it's a lot less possible to recover anything.

Shortest path to suggest a "Hail Mary" ressurection of your files- make good friends QUICKLY with someone comfortable using Linux! The "LiveCd" linux discs can often recover data otherwise gone forever.
All bets however are off if the recovery process used to get windows running again overwrote or formatted your old data.

As for the future?
Consider running Linux fulltime, or if you
MUST use windows- Firefox running from a USB drive eliminates legions of bad stuff slavering to eat your data.
