The entire family is gathered around the television, sighing with relief after each date is called. Safe, he thinks each time, Joe is safe. He keeps repeating it to himself like a mantra, like saying it will keep it true. The final date called is August 17th, and Nick feels the floor drop out from underneath him.

IT MIGHT BE.

Okay it totally is but I have no idea if I'll do anything with it. I really just love the idea of Nick becoming a protester because Joe is drafted and it makes the war real for him. (I totally have this vision of him in a green army jacket with extra long curls, screaming into a megaphone.) And I want Joe to be completely damaged and needy. I think maybe Kevin goes to Kent State, but I haven't gotten nearly that far. I'm trying to make an effort to remember that Kevin exists.

I really love the Vietnam era.
