I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed just how sheepish Joker was in The Trial episode. It almost seemed as if he was scared of being smacked by Harley. :P

Another instance where Joker was sheepish was in the BTAS episode of Joker's Millions where, at the end of the episode, Joker's bragging about how "nice it will be to see the old gang again." Then Harley comes out of the shadows "One of them's dieing to see you too, Puddin." Then he gets nervous, probably because he's tied up and he can't do anything about Harley. Still, it's interesting that he'd be shaking, as if in fear, around Harley like that. This, to me, is a sign that he really does care about her on some level. He still is human, after all. Despite being a psychopath, he isn't a robot after all. :) ...Or is he? ;)

Ahh Trial...

He gave her Batman's utility belt to wear. There's all sorts of symbolism there I can't even begin to articulate right now, way with words or no. I'll be back. But dang, I think that's really really significant. ;)

I've been meaning to catch up with these entries but school has pretty much made it impossible so I'll just post when I can.

I gotta say this struck me! I never noticed the change in their relationship with the episodes "The Trial" and "Harlequinade". Now, it's so obvious! I think it's because the first episode I really sat down and got into was "The Trial" so for me it's always been out of sequence, just because that particular episode meant so much to me.

But yes, he's clearly more accepting of the relationship and owns up to it at this point. How marvelous! At the same time, I don't think that was anyone's intent but a wonderful development all the same.

I think that's what I love most - I don't think it was really deliberate and considered, but it worked out that way anyway! And they subsequently have this very authentic relationship arc. It's so awesome.

If you watch, the same thing happens with Batman as a character and, again, I doubt it was intentional. In the beginning of the series he'd pop off an occasional one-liner and wouldn't be beyond the occasional smile and chuckle. As the series progressed he got darker and darker to the point where he barely had any dialogue at all and started hurting those closest to him. Even the animation reflects this as it gets crisper, cleaner, and more precise. It's amazing to watch really.

You're so right!

the animated show was so awesome for this and so many other reasons. You saw real character progression and evolution and it just happened because it had a creative team who really cared and even if they weren't doing it always consciously, had such an instinctive feel for the characters it happened anyway.
