*JOKER SPOTLIGHT* Artists: Brian Bolland

The Realism
Remembering that Bolland's depiction came straight on the heels of the seventies when Joker was being portrayed in an intensely cartoonish fashion - goofy and whacky rather than threatening and wild (with the exception of a few notables such as Laughing Fish) makes his vividly realistic Joker all the more special ( Read more... )

You've perfectly said everything I've been trying to explain to my friends. Particulary the 'Schmexiness' area.

I want to gather all Brian Bolland's Joker images together now. There have to be more I haven't seen. (I can't remember the last image, I don't know whether I've seen it before)

I heart this blog. Every entry is like a wee surprise. hee.

"knowing" and "sly" and "delighted"-- perfect words to describe his smile, if not a slice of him altogether. :)

What I enjoy lots, is how Bolland is most fantastic at letting the art speak for itself. You don't have to have any dialogue at all, I mean, and yet you already know a bit of what The Joker's about. You can just tell, by the way his eyes are narrowed, and how his smile is fixed in place. It's a trick not all artists can do, this drawing of body language--and so when you get one that does it well, it's really quite amazing.

I love Bolland's Joker. All these girls who think Ledger's Joker is the only "hot" Joker don't know what they're missing!

I think I agree with everything you said.I am seriously loving these spotlights! Keep them up please? And reply to the emotion paragraph-I think Joker can be at his scariness when he is shown not smiling,if done at the right moment. The moment in No Man's Land with Essen when Joker is shown not smiling is one of my favs.
