It was like fighting, one blow after another.
Blair noticed when River's breathing had steadied and he concentrated on reaching the spirit plane, focusing on pulling her with him. To River, it felt as if he reached out a hand for her and she grabbed hold of it, holding on tightly.
Around them trees had fallen over, and those still standing reached what remained of their blackened branches towards a cold blue sky. The fire that had passed over the land had left the earth bare and unprotected, the soil open to the powers of wind and rain. The signs of erosion were already visible, but even burnt roots managed to serve as protection, even though their life was gone. Here and there, on the highest points, the bare granite was visible, with its outmost layer cracked from the heat of the wildfire ( ... )

He knew she needed to get up and call people and he would eventually need to go to class. But for now, they could stay together and he could keep her safe.
