books.

I'm way behind on this; I need to jot down what I'm reading while it's still in my head.

Anyway.

Read
Something Wicked This Way Comes  by Ray Bradbury.

The Wonder Spot by Melissa Bank.  (I love MB for her characters that I can so painfully relate to, but things do get a little redundant at times.  Nonetheless, I'll probably keep reading everything she ( Read more... )

I have a bunch of books in my possession, but I have not been reading much lately. Since you asked...
  • The Spy Who Came In From The Cold by John le Carre (I have been reading this forever and I am only about 30% done. It is not as "spy" as the description "best buy novel" implies.)
  • Ubik by Philip K. Dick (This is my read-at-work novel that I have about 10% completed. It is hard to get into.)
  • I'm Just Here For the Food by Alton Brown (It is mostly procedure and a little cookbook/recipes. I think it is basically a written version of his show Good Eats.)
  • Beginning Perl by James Lee (I have been on chapter one of fifteen for about a year. I just cannot get into it, but I think Perl would be a good scripting language to know. It is a geek thing.)
  • Insurance Uses of Technology by James Fryer (This is book two of three for my AIT designation. I hope to have the book complete by January so I can take the test in mid-January.)
  • The Sun Also Rises by Ernest Hemmingway (I have not actually started this book yet, but I have it and will start it when ( ... )

I keep telling CJ he should order Dexter from Netflix, but he never really does it. :/

It sounds like you need a new selection; it sounds like those books aren't interesting enough for you. Plus, I sort of hate Alton Brown.

It is partially not taking/making the time to read, and partially not really liking the material. I am not ready to give up on them yet.

I do like Alton. I wish I had his cooking skills... and I can if I keep trying. I blame my small (read as: apartment sized) kitchen for why I do not try more. More than four square feet of prep space would help.

Today I went to B&N and found two new books I want: "How To Cook Anything Vegetarian" (which is written by someone who eats meat, too) and "I'm Just Here For More Food" (Alton's baking book similar to the other, which is about cooking).

Oh, and get CJ to get Dexter. Seriously. Hack his account if you have to. That show is excellent!

:)

I am actively reading (as opposed to have in a stack that is not being touched) John Updike's Rabbit, Run. I haven't read Updike before and I find him to be very wordy, awkwardly so at times, but the book isn't bad.

I don't know if I've ever read Updike before. I think I may have been assigned an Updike novel in high school, but that doesn't necessarily mean I read it.

One thing that sort of bothers me about my degree (English lit) is that there was a HUGE, disporportionate amount of emphasis placed on British lit. The only course I took in American lit was the early stuff (i.e., Hawthorne and the Puritans).

Anyway, would you recommend it?

I'm reading Science and God right now because I'm on this spiritual/death-related non-fiction kick. I was thinking the other day (while in the shower, no less...) that I really need to read a good fiction novel as I haven't in a while. Do you have any recommendations?

Hmm. Probably the best contemporary novel I've read in the last few yers is Stones from the River by Ursela Hegi. Almost everyone I know who read it loves it. It's about a dwarf girl growing up in Nazi Germany and it spans from her birth to towards the end of her life, so you getting a really interesting perspective about Nazi Germany. But the book isn't ABOUT Nazi Germany, really, it's about her life. It's really good. :) There's a sequel written that I sort of want to read, but I'm afraid it might not be as good as the first.

I only read one thing at a time. Right now it's There Are No Children Here by Alex Kotlowitz, a literary journalist. It's a true account of a young boy growing up in the Chicago projects. I'm reading it mostly because it's how I hope to write someday.

ooh. i love reading entries.

I just finished Good in Bed (which is def. silly chick lit but I really liked it)

Before that I read Motherless Brooklyn, which is about an orphan with tourette's syndrome that is "adopted" by a mobster -- very good.

Now I'm reading Dry by Augusten Burroughs -- it's a memoir about alcohol addiction.
