The two aren't mutually exclusive. I've spent a lot of time in psych wards and now I have far more control over my emotions than I used to. I'm sure some of it is the meds, but in that environment if you lose your shit you make things far worse for yourself; you face getting injections, locked door seclusion, restraints, ice baths...
For what it's worth, I don't think the things you desire in a partner are at all unreasonable or unattainable.
