So, I have an essay to write for my Sociology class this weekend. I need to research, examine, and make a conclusion on one of the four following topics:

1. In heterosexual relationships and marriages, what gender roles are there and what are there benefits or harms ( Read more... )

I would definitely go with 4, too. Even though I don't "mean it," I often stereotype the elderly myself. They're slow, bad drivers, don't understand modern society and technology, set in their ways and unwilling to accept change...
Like all stereotypes, they originate from common experiences people share and relate to. Everyone knows the old lady who got into a bad car accident that was all her fault in their town. Everyone knows that grandpa doesn't know how to do the self check-in machine at the airport (although they can be pretty confusing haha). Everyone knows "the one old person" who just confirms all of their beliefs about old people in general.

I can't think of how they're harmful except for emotionally. People tend to treat the elderly as if they're not even people, for whatever reason. It can be very discouraging and unpleasant for a relatively competent old person to have to be treated like a child.

Thanks a lot. :D

I have the same ideas as you. I think the emotional harms are enough for a community that has such high rates of depression and suicide.

#4. They're all right wing born-again christians, they're all weak and frail, unskilled, and oftentimes that they don't know a damn thing, after a certain age they just get stupid. Their wealth of experience goes completely unnnoticed more often than not because of some view of ubiquitous senility or something, they're all trusting and nice and gullible/easy to take advantage of. A lot of stereotypes I think stem from our own insecuirites about loss of control and fears about growing old. A lot of people are fucking SCARED of the elderly, and don't even want to acknowledge their existance. I could think more but it's 1 in the morning. I could be a lot more articulate, but damn I'm tired.

#3. EVERYONE GETS FUCKING MARRIED LESS THAN A MONTH AFTER GRADUATION, TO PEOPLE THAT THEY DIDN'T KNOW WHEN THEY WERE IN HIGH SCHOOL! OMFG! =O That's my evidence. :P

#2. Yes. Yes. Done.

#1. Can't touch this. :P

Umm, yeah.

its interesting...i think #2 seems like its asking a largely opinion based question whereas the other 3 seem to be asking more factual questions. although you'd obviously have to give one, it doesn't ask for an explanation or facts to back up your opinion or anything ( ... )

It does.

I had similar thoughts about number 2. It seems like people will be able to just answer the question, rather than providing supporting evidence.
