Young Adult Fiction and Romance talk

its just as well I didn't do much, I got up out of bed and immediately fell sideways as my world tilted.  I'm still light-headed even after eating, light exercise (30 minute walk) and taking my vitamin.  Damn stupid weather I think my blood pressure is being whacked around again.

So because I wanted to stay still I read a bunch of posts about Young ( Read more... )

Ahh, I want to comment on the essays, because it's a very interesting read, but I don't read enough YA to be able to give anykind of commentary or insight. I know it's prevalant throughout many, many genres, but I'm too firm in my own ideas of fantasy-versus-reality to shake it off; trying to remember how it would feel to read them as a much younger girl feels so far away, but I'm more than sure they have had some sort of influence on me.

I will say that it makes me wish to keep researching for a more realistic and healthy representation of the fictional D/s relationship I'm currently working on. Though that's much more adult in comparison, it makes me realize the stereotypes and abusive tropes that go on in there as well, and I want to approach it respectfully, and more importantly, in a healthy manner. One that doesn't turn the submissive/slave into a victim.

As much as I understand the fantasy of power play and the like, I'll never fathom why people consider it functional as an actual loving relationship in the slightest. Bella ( ... )

That is the general drawback to the essays, though remind me to look up the essays done on pretty much the same topic but with mainstream fiction/romance books. I know have a page about it somewhere.

I think because my mindset is a flexible thing, I tend to ignore the fact its YA. Plus many of the YA's I read feature MC's who are mature and act more my age then I do (this is a by product of reading Regencies as a child I think...)

I don't read a whole lot of D/s stories, though I have been reading more romance novellas of that nature because of one of the sites I review for, though often its light play, not anything heavy. I kind of inch away from such topics though because the thought of giving control over or controlling someone terrifies me. I dislike both roles immensely and prefer solitude you know?

-.-;; I admit to being an Edward fangirl for all of 5 minutes (not literally) and dropped his ass soon as I found better guys to adore...like David Tennant or Neil Patrick Harris.

I'd be interested in reading them if you get a chance to find them. I always love some good insight, especially on gender topics.

My problem might be that I never was exposed much to the genre, even when I was young, except for like, Harry Potter probably. Most of the books that was around the house was either my grandpa's old westerns or my mom and brother's sci-fi/fantasy. I'll have to give YA a better shot.

Haha, honestly I agree with you on that fear, I'm just too fascinated by human sexuality to not peek. Though some of the fiction I've read really scared me off at first, reading more realistic experiences eased me back into toying with the idea, even if for an exercise.

Aww, that's okay. The idea perked my interest, I think it was a quote from one of the books, but then actually seeing the whole context made me slowly walk out of the room backwards. NPH and David Tennant are much more worthy of your attentions anyway. ;D
