Ah, this!

People don't seem to understand that you can be friendly and terrifyingly reticent at the same time. It's like they're programmed to think all shy people, when approached, will be rude, because what shy people want is always to be left alone. (Now, sometimes shy people do want to be left alone, but often they'd like to connect with people, too...)
