She wasn't supposed to feel this way. No. Not at all. This was wrong. She kept telling her companion that Richard would come and get them out of that tomb. The Seeker would come and save the day, like he always did.
Kahlan knew that by now she was probably getting on Cara's nerves - seemingly trying to encourage her and give her faith. But that was not Kahlan's reason. Far from it.
The Mother Confessor simply needed to remind herself that Richard was her knight in shining armor; that she would only feel safe once she was back in his arms.
But now that she was stuck with Cara in that forsaken tomb she realized that gradually a lot had changed. Even though Richard was absent, gone and her own life in danger - she still felt safe. Calm. Perfectly protected. And it was then that she realized.
It was Cara.
The realization alarmed the Confessor quite a bit. After all, the Mord'Sith had killed her sister, countless other Confessors and innocent people. She was sarcastic, overconfident in her actions and closed off.
Again she told Cara that Richard would probably be there soon and rescue them. What she was actually telling herself was that Cara was no Prince Charming. She might have come to accept the Mord'Sith's presence but could not allow herself to ever let her mind wander... to Cara. How it would feel to actually touch her smooth skin. To hold. To be held. Kahlan shook her head.
Richard was her Prince Charming. So she forced herself to replace Cara with Richard in her thoughts.
Kahlan succeeded. She always did. In her mind she was now embraced by Richard, but it suddenly didn't feel comforting and soft. It felt restricting. But she knew that she and Cara could never be. First of all, because Cara would never return the feelings she had. Cara didn't allow herself to feel. So her wishful thinking was just that. Wishful thinking.
The Mother Confessor has just managed to convince herself when Cara's voice pulled her out of her thoughts and brought her back to reality. She could hardly believe her own ears. Could not believe what she was hearing.
Kahlan cursed Cara for her timing. Admitting and showing true feelings when she had just convinced herself that the two of them could never be. She almost fainted when she thought that Cara was about to say that she loved Kahlan, but even the admission of considering Kahlan her friend brought tears to her eyes, but also an honest smile. One she only gave Cara as of recently.
She replied that she considered Cara friend too, but actually meant that she loved Cara. She loved the stubborn, sarcastic, witty and dry humored Mord'Sith. No one would have thought that this could be, least of all Kahlan herself, but it had happened. There was something she simply had not seen before. She still couldn't name it, but she knew it was there and that was enough.
She could wait. Would wait. For as long as need be.
Gently she took hold of Cara's hand and squeezed her fingers to reassure her that her words were true. The smile - as faint and hidden as it may have been - was more than she ever could have asked for.
Then Cara squeezed her fingers back and that was the moment Kahlan decided that she would not try to ignore her feelings for Cara. That she simply could not. Would not. Again she smiled at Cara confidently.
"You will get us out of here."
