In honor of Banned Book Week (my cause of the week) I am going to post a couple quotes about censorship every day. Aren't you excited?!
To find out more about "Banned Book Week" see my previous post.
"Censorship reflects a society's lack of confidence in itself. It is the hallmark of an authoritarian regime..."
-- Justice Potter Stewart, dissenting Ginzberg v. United States, 383 U.S. 463 (1966)
"Censorship is telling a man he can't have a steak just because a baby can't chew it."
-- Mark Twain
"We are not afraid to entrust the American people with unpleasant facts, foreign ideas, alien philosophies, and competitive values. For a nation that is afraid to let its people judge the truth and falsehood in an open market is a nation that is afraid of its people."
-- John F. Kennedy
"All of us can think of a book... that we hope none of our children or any other children have taken off the shelf. But if I have the right to remove that book from the shelf - that work I abhor - then you also have exactly the same right and so does everyone else. And then we have no books left on the shelf for any of us."
-- Katherine Paterson, American author of childrens books (1932-)
Okay, so that was more than a couple, but this is so important! I know people that have had books change and shape their lives (including myself), sometimes it's the only thing that keeps reality at bay long enough to keep people from going insane.
P.S. All these quotes come from
http://quotes.forbiddenlibrary.com/ where you can also find a list of previously banned books and usually the reasons why they were banned. There are A LOT more than you think...
