Author’s Notes: One of the challenges of being a new author, especially when tackling areas of fandom that have been covered by many of her more-established contemporaries, is attempting to come up with one’s own, hopefully book-based, spin on events that while clearly unique still makes intrinsic sense to the reader. It is hard not to be influenced by those who have gone before you, and as most of my work with the Travellers deals with how they would act shortly before, during, and (sometimes long) after the Quest, it was tricky trying to establish how their characters and relationships would have played out some seventeen years before with little to no context but my fellow authors’ say-so ( ... )

So much for that. In other aspects of his character Pippin is selfish, petulant, and ignorant, but no more (I hope) than any child in his situation would be. He will learn to know better, and I imagine that meeting someone like Sam, who managed to defy all of his preconceptions, helped to break that down. The final scene shows that over time Pippin does gain some awareness of how his behavior is seen by other people, and has learned to be understanding even of someone who has been known to him for the past nine years only as “that beastly gardener lad.” That scene of recognition (and indeed the germ of the whole tale, in which two people destined to be lifelong friends meet for the first time, don’t even bother to ask each other’s names, and do not get along in the least) was modeled after, if not outright stolen from, Great Expectations, and is the main reason I fudged so much on Pippin and Sam not seeing one another for so long a stretch of time ( ... )
