Oh, now this is definitely an enticing look at these two enigmatic figures! How intriguing that they laid down staff and oath to follow whatever fate they found. Thanks for a thought-provoking story!

This is entirely my own interpretation, but I always saw a wizard's staff as a symbol of his Westerly task, as charged by whatever Vala sent the Istar. So when Alatar and Pallando set aside their mission, they set aside the tangible reference to that task.

All in my own head, of course.
