The Premise
Flight 2342 departed Sydney, Australia on Konoha Airlines, bound for Los Angeles, California, at 9:15AM on September 22, 2009. Your character was on that flight for a reason probably tinged with cosmic irony. The game begins when, six hours into the flight, mild turbulence leads to major turbulence. The plane breaks in three pieces in mid-air, ending with the middle/front of the plane crashing on the shore of an uncharted island. There were 306 passengers on the Boeing 777, and roughly 40-50 survivors when the smoke settles. The survivors will wait for rescue, and in the mean time, adapt to living on an island by scavenging the plane wreckage and eventually venturing into the forest. Like most things in life, things aren't that simple, and it will become extremely obvious very quickly that they are not alone on the island. Mystery! Intrigue! Action! Scary things! Romance! All these things and more.
The opening event for the game will be the crash, and how everyone reacts and handles it. Characters will be wounded, NPCs will survive the crash only to die in another fashion. Hey, it's a good ice breaker! Don't worry: there was a doctor on the plane.
Subsequent important plot developments will mostly be handled by the mods, either at our choosing or when characters venture into story that will trigger an event. There is a story for this game that we hope the characters and players alike will be motivated to discover.
Oh... and characters will slowly develop something akin to their canon powers the longer they stay on the island. These powers will come in very handy later on, when things become even more dangerous for the survivors.
Rules
Metagaming is a no-no. Don't control another character in your replies (not even a little). Remember that your character is not perfect nor invincible. They will not succeed in everything that they do, and that's okay! They can be hurt, they can get caught doing something wrong... conversely, they are not all-knowing. Don't use OOC knowledge ICly!
Activity is important. There will be activity checks at the end of every month. You should ideally have involved your character in at least one interaction and one log every two weeks, and involvement in mod-run events that would affect your character is mandatory. It's really very easy to do just the minimum, and feel free to ping people even if you don't have a log idea in mind. Please take into account the amount of free time you have at the moment and any time-consuming things that may begin in the near future (school, work, travel) before applying -- such as, if you know that you won't have any free time for awhile soon after you apply, please consider apping when your schedule is more open.
Only canon Naruto characters are allowed to be applied for. No OCs. Additionally, there are certain characters that will not be allowed to be apped for due to their deep involvement with the story's plot.
In Character Actions = In Character Consequences
(ICA = ICC) - If you choose to have your character do something, keep in mind that you will have to deal with the consequences of those actions. There may not be law enforcement in any capacity on the island, but the survivors will band together and form their own sort of society, so your character cannot get away with just anything you want. It's perfectly alright for them to seriously hurt (or kill, and both with permission) another character or NPC, but you (the player) must accept the consequences that your character will face. This also applies to little things. Anything that your character does that can affect another player has the potential to create undesirable consequences, and you need to be ready to accept that.
You must have an AIM name and actually use it. If you are available to chat, plot or RP, please be signed into it; otherwise, no one will know when you're available.
Do not push plots or pairings onto other players. If they say no, or seem uncomfortable, just accept their answer. If you feel that someone is pressuring you into something you're not comfortable with, please let a mod know!
If you have an alt, do not interact with them.
No pregnancies.
Stay IC. I know this sounds obvious, but please try to keep your character as close to their canon personality as possible. I realize this is a different setting than the Naruto series occurs, but that's not an excuse to deviate greatly from their canon self. There is, of course, room for creative freedom and small tweaks. Just don't give Lee a frightening temper, don't make Shino chatty, and don't make Hinata slutty. That sort of thing.
Do not lie to the mods for the love of god. If for some reason you don't want another player (or players) to know who you are, please at least be up front about that fact with the mods. We will respect your request for privacy! Promise. Just... seriously come on please. If you're going to lie, at least lie well and give us a challenge. But yeah we'll still figure you out.
Character Death
Yes, your character can die. Only with both your consent and with approval from the mods, however. Because character death in this game is rather permanent, it is not recommended to try killing off your character if you haven't done much with them. Established characters that have contributed a lot to the game plot are eligible for being killed off, but it should only be done if the player is either dropping from the game or has another alt lined up.
Yes, another character can be responsible for your character's death. Both parties must be in agreement, obviously.
When a player decides to have their character die, they can contact the mods for approval and, if approved, discuss the details of their death scene. It will be cool and hopefully dramatic and awesome, or at least one of those. If you would like to keep it under wraps, the mods can be discrete, but it's also recommended that you tell any players that you RP with a lot that you plan to work the character out of the story.
In the event that you have an alt and decide stick around the game, you may be called on to reprise your role as the deceased character in flashbacks; otherwise, that character will be controlled by one of the mods and kept as IC as possible according to your characterization.
FAQ
LOST-specific questions!
What if I've never watched LOST! D: Or I'm allergic to network television!
That's okay!! It's not mandatory or even really important to know anything about LOST to join and enjoy this game. Because all of the characters are replaced with Naruto characters, the only thing you need to worry about is knowing your character well. If you want to read up on the show, be warned that you will run into no small amount of spoilers for the show (and to some extent the game) by googling for it, so feel free to talk to Pink, because she is an expert on this show. Like it's sort of scary.
You are being all secretive and vague and stuff!! augh
Because there are plot developments that we want to be a surprise, we have to be careful about the information we share with you guys. Because you're crafty and tend to figure things out OOCly. It also cuts down on the use of OOC knowledge. If you need us to expand on something, please let us know and we will try our best to answer them!
Why are you asking so many specific questions in the application! I am angry about that but I don't really know why
We are aiming to make this game a lot like the show LOST in that coincidences are way more than commonplace. In order to orchestrate that properly, we need a ton of info so we can piece things together behind the scenes. Not only that, but we want to make sure that every character is able to have a sub-plot specific to them at some point.
In addition, you will be tapped at specific times to roleplay flashback logs in order to expand on key points in your character's background. These will be arranged by the mods, but you are welcome to suggest flashback ideas or ask to do one whenever you'd like.
Okay so they're on an island that sounds really boring is this like Gilligan's Island and who is the Skipper because obviously Naruto is Gilligan etc etc etc The first part/arc of the game will focus solely on character development, life on the island and the mysteries the characters are beginning to discover. That means a lot of interaction between characters doing less than exciting feats sprinkled with a crisis here and there, but it will all be important! Then, mysteriously, characters will begin gaining powers that are suspiciously like their canon powers, and shit will get confusing! We are probably not pulling everything out of our asses as we write the story for this game. So don't worry. It will be entertaining. We hope.
What is this superpower nonsense.
It is not superpowers! It is the power(s) your character has canonly, slightly tailored so that it better suits the mysterious island setting. The mods will be working with you to make sure no one is overpowered, while still keeping close to attributes of the manga. However, your character will not gain these powers for a short while ICly; after a certain point of being stranded on the island, the mods will let you know when the powers will start to slowly reveal themselves to the characters. Think of it in terms of what their canon power might turn into if it were a mutant ability. This can include all the basic ninja nonsense, from leaping to walking on water; or more specific signature jutsus, such as the Hyuuga's byakugan. You can mix and match them depending on the character. Keep in mind that when these powers first show up, the characters will not be very adept at controlling them and using them with the finesse and skill that they do in the show... think of them as ninja academy graduates.
As an example: Sakura eventually notices that when she's angry and hits things in a flare of her temper, there is serious damage to her targets and a distinct lack of serious damage to her hand. She would slowly get stronger, but without proper training she can only seem to summon this energy when she's really pissed off. If she's not upset, she punches like a normal girl (a girl named Sakura). It could also include her medical skills, allowing her to detect problems in someone's body as a sort of sixth sense, and to gauge how bad it is. Starting out, she may just be vaguely aware that something is wrong with someone, but doesn't understand why; as the game progresses, she could get a better grasp of exactly what's wrong with them.
How do they have online journals!! THEY ARE ON AN ISLAND. FFFFFFF
Okay okay, calm down. Take a deep breath. Now listen goddamn it.
You will use your character's journal for all of the following:
What would be regular in-character journal posts are actually in a journal. Like handwritten and everything, so you can do spelling errors and hearts over the 'i's and all that jazz. It can be in a whole journal or a piece of scrap metal or a bit of paper from a book. Whatever. Just handwritten and no, you will not be able to post in-character reactions/comments to a journal entry. Plus this way you can write that Ino is a total bitch without her flipping out. Of course, please use [JOURNAL] in the subject line.
You will also be able to post small interactions. Interactions between characters that would maybe be too small for an actual log, and they may involve as many other characters as you like. It can also be nearly all dialogue. This is to encourage more interactions between more characters, and makes it much easier to get your characters outside their comfort zones... and to keep the players engaged. Interactions will be asterisk form and should be kept short, as well as tagged with [INTERACTION] in the subject line. From there, you will use the posting template to list the date, time and location of the interaction, and will include the action your character is doing. It can be [CLOSED] (open only to specific characters you've invited) or [OPEN] (open to whoever would like to reply).
Lastly, you can feel free to post what your character is up to on the island. Since there is a lot of free time and you won't be roleplaying out every minute (at least, probably not), you may want to just briefly update people on how your character spends their time on the island. Do they disappear into the forest for hours at a time? Have they managed to rig a ping-pong table and are constantly playing it? Are they trying to learn how to fish? These things will change based on plot progression, so you may want to update it whenever your character changes their habits.
Do all characters have to be the same age?
No, but please keep in mind that characters will not be teenagers, with exceptions for characters such as Konohamaru, and those exceptions are few and far between. They DO NOT have to be the same age as other members on their canon team, but if your character knows another canonly, you might as the player their preference/opinion. The main Naruto teens should be in their 20's or possibly 30's, but characters who are adults in the show need not be all that much older.
Will the characters know each other at the beginning of the game?
No, unless otherwise discussed between players involved and the mod. This will be unlikely but is possible with a handful of characters. It's just to keep everyone from being BFFs or knowing too much about the other characters.
What sort of technology is available to my character?
...you're on an island. Rocks, sticks, coconuts. Any cell phones or GPS or Boost Mobile 'WHERE YOU AT' things have only their current battery life (if they survived the plane crash) and no reception. You can't call your mom (I already called her 'cause she was missin' my lovin') and you can't call Pizza Hut.
Wahhhh what about the Akatsuki?
You are more than welcome to have a canon Akatsuki member be a survivor from the plane crash. Not all of the survivors are necessarily good people. If you are looking for a taste of something a little more antagonistic... inquire within with the mods.
How do characters communicate on the island?
By you know. Talking. In order to survive, characters will need to stay mostly grouped together, and you know, never go off by themselves (which will happen of course) and NO SEX IN THE JUNGLE. I'm serious. This is my serious face right now. Or on the beach because you will get sand in weird places. I'm not joking. Don't try it. (Totally try it.)
Keep in mind that there were around 40 survivors from the crash, so cliques will form even amongst the NPCs. Not everyone will know exactly what every other character is doing, and although news travels fast it's not unlikely that important details may not make it around to every character.
So since the flight is from Australia to L.A., does my character have to be American or Australian?
No, you can choose to make your character either from another country or another nationality, or both. It is possible to take a character who doesn't understand English, but keep in mind it will be a severe handicap for you, even if another character is bilingual and can translate for you.
I want to be [A MYSTERIOUS PERSON WHO WAS NOT ON THE PLANE CRASH]. They sound awesome.
They are awesome. You are welcome to have your character be [A MYSTERIOUS PERSON WHO WAS NOT ON THE PLANE CRASH], but keep in mind! They have been on the island for a while, even if they are a brother/sister/cousin/whatever to a character already in play, and near the beginning of the game you will probably be all alone. All characters at the initial start up will be survivors of the plane crash, but for applicants/players that miss the opening event, it is entirely possible to make them [A MYSTERIOUS PERSON WHO WAS NOT ON THE PLANE CRASH], or to have them been on the island for a while.
RP-specific Questions!
PB? Like PB and J?
No silly, a PB is a Player Base/played-by model used to portray your character instead of their animated design. Check out
Hollow Art for ideas, but if you still can't find one you think matches your character, the mod is happy to help with suggestions!
Do I have to have AIM to play? I hate AIM!
Yes. This is an absolute must for this game, since it is our primary form of getting in contact with one another. It can also be used for writing logs with, though we suggest using
Google Documents because it is much neater (and we have a pre-made template!). If you don't want to keep the AIM program on your computer, you might find
meebo useful (it's web-based.)
What if I've never RPed before! I am so panicking right now.
Perfectly okay. It's easy! You don't have to have been into roleplaying for seven years to possess skillful writing, which is primarily what we look for. And an understanding of the game you are getting yourself into, so make sure you read ALL of the 'before-you-apply' things! If you have trouble figuring things out, don't be afraid to ask the mod or other players, and yes, we know it can be difficult to break out of that shy shell the first time around. We're friendly, don't even worry about it. If you think you're being annoying, keep in mind that we would prefer lots of questions to be sure things are done right over no questions and a messy RP.
How many characters can I have?
Two. The end. And they cannot know each other or interact. The mods can and will be portraying certain characters for plot purposes, but they will only be used to progress the plot. If someone is up to taking one of those characters after we've introduced them, talk to the mods, who may be more than happy to pawn them off hand them over!
Why do I have to be 18 or over! I'm 14 and really mature for my age! ^_^
Because we said so. And don't try to lie! We'll know. We have strange ways of finding out. It's hard to lie to us. e_e
Why wasn't my application accepted?
If your application was rejected or marked as pending, we will have given you a reason why already. Most likely we feel that there should be some more background work on your character, or that he/she is too far from canon. We are more than happy to work with you on adjusting tweaks to make your application pitch perfect!
What is an 'event-driven' community?
The mods will be providing the community with lots of events to reply to, from small, mundane things that might not affect everyone... to huge, important, earth-shattering events. What you do with your characters will partially determined what happens, but you are also free to suggest plots, even if they are central to your character.
However, being that the game is also about life on a seemingly deserted island, what that means is that you, the player, need to interact with your fellow players and come up with sub-plots between characters. Do not use the mod events as a crutch, and please RP outside of those! It's important (and fun!) to remember that your characters have a TON of free time on their hands and will want to fill it in some interesting ways.
