out of it

i just spent the day home sick with some sort of throat infection. kim is in denver till tomorrow for work-related stuff so i was home alone with kitty. i feel pretty out of it lately. like things are changing all around me and i'm tangentially, remotely aware but i'm not following on as closely as i used to. i don't know, maybe it's just a silly ( Read more... )

Last I heard of Blake he was teaching in New York. Glad to hear he's got a new band even if they're not blowing minds. I actually bought the last Jets to Brazil album about a year after it came out and then didn't listen to it for 3 years because I'd heard so many bad things. When I finally got around to it, it actually wasn't that bad. Could've just been my lowered expectations, though.

As for feeling disappointed with his new material, I'd have to think it's only natural. He'll always be performing in the shadow of Jawbreaker, with all the expectations that come with that. And I've found that with music, nothing connects on an emotional level quite like the stuff you listened to when you were coming of age. So to expect him to reach those same highs again seems fruitless. Eh, I don't know what I'm trying to say. It's early and I haven't had my coffee yet.

yeah, this is his rate my professor page (some of the comments are kind of creepy). but i'm glad he's still playing music too. and as far as blowing minds is concerned, i think all of my other jawbreaker friends (yes, jawbreaker friends) seemed to really dig thorns of life, so i think i'm actually the black sheep here.

i honestly didn't listen to the last jets album very much. it just didn't grab me and i couldn't shake the disappointment. the title track was good and maybe one or two others but some of it was so bad... "rocket boy", for instance, is just criminally awful.

i know what you're saying though. but it's not that i expected the same connection necessarily... i guess i just expected progression, and i felt like i got regression instead.

I think the reason i enjoyed it so much is that it WAS nostalgia music. no, it wasn't new or even really insightful. but it was fun, like the old days, and that's nice once and awhile. but surely Blake can do better. maybe he just doesn't want to try so hard.
