Took me a while to figure out animation, but it's not too hard, really. This is my first animated icon, sort of the same deal. One large static image with several smaller frames layered to make the animated gif.

What are you aiming for? I could take a shot at it, or ramble at length trying to explain the concept. Most of what I've learned has been through a whole lot of trial and error, so I don't have any easy how-to site to suggest, unfortunately.
