You've made me realise that I need to try to get back to Cambridge one more time before my funding runs out.
The clocks and bells do keep strict time - it's just that it isn't Greenwich Mean Time, but rather their own. The same phenomenon is observable in Oxford. Until the railways required everyone to be on the same time, everywhere kept their own time, and the insitutions of Oxford and Cambridge, being Oxford and Cambridge, saw no need to change their habit of centuries. It's an opportunity to hear a medieval soundscape.

Thanks for the information about the clocks. It's a sad fact that I've not previously heard multiple bells in either city over the roar of tourists. From that point of view May is better than July.
