Wow. From your description, I suspect I'd love the writing and the acting, but come out of viewing this show too depressed to function.

Thanks for the review. I think I'll keep my eyes open in case the writers/producers of Boss decide to try their hand at something less dark.

Yeah, seriously. I hate warning labels, and don't put them on my own work (for the most part). But I'd hate for someone on my f-list to read my review without getting how unrelentingly dark the show really is. I almost feel like they invented a new genre: Political Horror.

It's also the smartest writing on TV I've seen in years. As long as you can brace yourself for the insane betrayals, skullduggery and pure evil, you will love it. I cannot overstate how amazing Kelsey Grammar is (and would LOVE to see him do King Lear). His Mayor Kaine is magnetic, tragic and terrifying.

It's crazy... this is a guy who played Frasier Crane for most of his career. He won lots of awards for "Boss" (including the Golden Globe) and really, really deserved it.

(I usually can't bear Kelsey Grammar, although by the sounds of the role he plays in Boss somehow I don't think that will be a problem.

Well, he sure isn't playing Dr. Frasier Crane here! I don't think surprised is a good enough word... I was shocked at how real a character he was able to create in Mayor Kaine (it probably helped that he is the show's executive producer).

Also, your review has me intrigued as to just how fucking dark this show is, you make The Wire sound like a sitcom in comparison.

The weird thing is, if you watch the trailer for the series, it really gives no indication how good (and sinister) the show really is. I vaguely remember seeing the commercial for it on TV and thinking, "Yeah, whatever, Fraiser." Not that it made the show look bad, it's just that it didn't make it look special. This is a pretty special show, IMHO.

Ooooh, very interesting: I had heard reviews that classified Boss more as over-the-top sensationalist drama, but it's interesting to see that it might actually be about -- gasp -- real political machines, told as darkly as possible. And of course I love Kelsey Grammar.

That said, I have been feeling pretty gloomy of late, so maybe I'll wait on it until I think I'm able to stomach said abyss. Maybe if I need my Kelsey Grammar dark political take fix, I'll watch the episode of The Simpsons where Sideshow Bob runs for Mayor a few more times.

Yeah, this. Chances are, if some reviewer was calling it "over-the-top sensationalist," they either don't know the history of such machines (Tammany, Kansas City, Cook County, etc)... or their local machine already "got to" their editor, if you catch my drift. ;)
