Out of the Unknown Mini-Reviews (Disc 1)

Jan 06, 2016 13:42

Okay, my thoughts on Out of the Unknown, because, hey, despite my embarrassment at my lack of science education and unfortunate introductions to anthologies I once read, I've decided that I am still allowed to like and have opinions on science fiction. However, it's mid-century stuff, so this probably barely counts as a rebellion, but given that I ( Read more... )

James Maxwell's hair is nice and tidy:) Don't like David hemmings, has Julian Glover turned up yet?

From the non-Who pit of old TV sci-fi, 'A for Andromeda' and it's sequel had women in it, they stayed on Earth though, everyone did and Peter Haliday was the woman(lol). 'Quatermass and the Pit' had a female assistant can't remember if it was to the Prof or an archaeologist, she didn't do much more than make the tea though. And all I recall from 'Quatermass II' was Roger Delgado;p

Yes, I would kind of assume you'd get at least better representation for TV, because they want at least a couple nice looking females around, plus it's different for stuff you're dramatising. It's just short stories/novels by all these men apparently... 0_o

I don't really know David Hemmings, but he was v good in being just that bit weird in this. However, I don't believe we get any Julian Glover at all, so, actually, OOTU probably wouldn't be worth your while after all!

Shame they couldn't have done the old getting an actress in to play the role given to a man swap. I hope there are some improvements as you go along.

It's an irrational dislike and 'Blow Up' is over-rated.

Loads of eps and no Julian Glover? No wonder they lost reels;p

Oh, they may yet. Today's ep was a little better on that front (just)!

Unless they did have a Julian Glover and they lost him? But I suspect he was too busy with villainous plots in The Avengers while it was on. ;-)

Well...maybe it gets better? I mean, they had James Maxwell, so they were on the right track somewhere.

*HUGS*

Oh, I'm enjoying it! I'm just looking askance at all these Classic SF writers who apparently couldn't imagine a future where women did anything except marry men. I'm going to give the first to imagine it a medal.

But the series is cool! I've been wanting it for ages.

Very odd indeed for Asimov as he created Susan Calvin (Scientist and leading robotics expert of the future) in the 40s. So it's not like he didn't see women as scientists in the future.

I know. It may even have been the adapter; it's one line in particular in that one - and the lack of any female academics seen in it, but it's a small cast & definitely one of the better eps so far.

I'm really thrilled to have the box set at last, though, and still gutted that they lost so much of it.

Me too! Beatrix played Susan Calvin in one of them and I would give almost ANYTHING to be able to see that! I did find a lot of them on youtube a couple years ago and it was definitely a mixture of futures without women and those with. It always amazes me that there is so much science fiction without women. I was kinda horrified when re-watching Revenge of the sith this week, a 21st century film, that had only one speaking part for a woman and that of the distraught wife/mother.

I just wanted to let you know that a) I have just ordered this and b) thanks to your remarkably thorough tagging, it only took 30 seconds for me to find this review in order to order it! You are the best.

 *looks at review* The first disc isn't terribly good, except for James Maxwell, and I'm a tad biased on that one. My set got returned because of a broken DVD, so you will have to tell me how the rest went! (I'd got to disc 3, I think, or halfway through the Naked Sun and audio!only wee David Collings as Daneel.) I hope you enjoy shaky sexist apocalyptic 60s SF! :-)

(I don't understand people who don't tag things. Or, I do. But not comms. How can you have a big comm without tags? /librarian)

ETA: My disc that broke was the one where wee David Collings breaks down a lot in an apocalypse. I hope yours is not equally cursed and you get to enjoy wee breaky angsty David Collings properly.
