Fic: This Single World Is Double Till I Die (OUaT)

May 19, 2014 17:05

I haven't posted this to AO3 yet, so if anyone who's from the US and knows OUaT (or knows they don't care about it) has the time to glance over it and tell me if there are any glaring Britishisms, that would be wonderful, thank you. ♥ (Oh, and if it conflicts with S3, don't tell me! Unless you can do so without giving anything away, of course. ( Read more... )

Oh, I liked this! The absurdity of Regina and Emma living under one roof... that gradually seems to become less and less absurd. And Regina being saved by True Love's kiss... and back to square one.

And this: "I don’t believe in all that stuff. Oh, I don’t mean magic. I get that. But all that about good and evil? Life’s not like that." Sums up the show's viewpoint quite well I think :D

The only british-isms (or possibly just a typo?) I noticed were:

Regina leant back against the wall and would have wished this had happened with anyone else, except she couldn’t think of anyone round here who wouldn’t be even more tiresome.

I'd say "around here" instead of "round here"

And

"Look, I’m the one doing you a favour here"

Which should be "favor" in American spelling.

Ah, thank you! I wasn't really worrying about the spellings (maybe I should be; I don't the other way round, though), but anything like the "round here" thing and dialogue errors and all that - they can be so jarring, I know, so that's great.

I'm glad you liked it, though. ♥ It is an odd bit of fic, and I didn't know if it worked. (I'm still not sure the turnaround at the end isn't just a notch too sudden/short; might see if I can add in a sentence or two while I'm at it...)

It sets it up that everything works by fairy tale logic, and that there is such a thing as good and evil, storybook heroes and villains, and you can solve nearly anything with true love, but then it undercuts that by making said villains genuinely complex (I mean, Regina, talk about being your own ( ... )

I am giggling at the thought of Emma giving Regina a "True Love's kiss". It is so ironic and I wonder if Gold knew, even though he said there was no cure.

Oh, Gold knew, definitely! If he hadn't, he might have been a bit more helpful to Emma at the start. And, thank you - glad you enjoyed it!

Look, I have finally gotten the chance to read your fic! Well, this one, anyway. Hopefully I'll get to the other OUaT stuff soonish.

Anyway, this is the kind of trope subversion I love! I can't imagine playing it completely straight with those two and having it work, but this one does well. Great character voices, too.

Thank you! It's kind of funny, because it wouldn't be untrue to say that I set out to play it straight, but I just... ended up here instead. :-)

I kind of love it when trope fics do that. Mind you, I almost never seem capable of even starting out to play them straight.

By the way, I went and looked at the infamous comments on this on AO3, and, man, all I can say is that that first commenter clearly had some Issues, which I'm pretty sure are hers and not the story's.

Heh, my first fic with an infamous comment! (Well, apart from that one where I thought I had a troll, but it was just someone pretending to be Turlough...) And I know, but I'm still aware that I can see ways in which the fic set up could have been very misleading, and the change at the end seem a harder slap-down that it was intended. (My intent was always that as denial, fundamentally, but fics shouldn't require mind-reading.)

And as for the trope, it's just that I'm such a coward when it comes to writing ship fic! It's like I secretly think someone'll come and arrest me for it. Ah well... It's all for fun! ;-)
