Ah, those early black-and-white Carry Ons have a charm all their own... I don't think it was till Carry on Spying maybe that they got the formula down pat... Carry on Sergeant - not only does it have Hartnell (who's great in it!), but bizarrely a very young-looking Bob Monkhouse as well!! My favourite Carry On is either Up the Khyber, or Carry On Screaming, as the mood takes me...
I think Carry on Spying came after a couple of the colour ones - it was made deliberately in b&w. I'm sure Cleo came first. My favourites are Cabby and Cowboy, but I think either Cleo, Screaming or Carry on Up the Khyber probably are the funniest.
And I really do love the b&w ones. Watching in retrospect, no one's roles have been set in stone yet (except poor Hattie). I know, I cannot get over Bob Monkhouse. It's one of the most distracting things about any film I know!! (Lots of the early ones also turn up a young Bill Owen, who doesn't look much different to the old Bill Owen, save for the bobble hat).
