The Ingenuity of Edith Artois (or The Nicked Knockwursts Get Nicked Again)

I got the story written (for Kanna-Ophelia in NYR) at last.  See here: http://yuletidetreasure.org/archive/86/theingenuity.html

Summary: Michelle's plan has gone wrong (again) and it's up to Edith to save the day.  This would be so much easier if everyone else would get out ( Read more... )

fannish scribbles, yuletide, allo allo

Good Moaning... jjpor February 21 2009, 14:23:12 UTC
Nice fic; I loved Crabtree and Herr Flick in particular. Allo Allo is great; one of those things that's easy to dismiss as another old politically-incorrect sitcom, but far cleverer, and far better-performed, than a casual viewer might give it credit for. That scene is hilarious - "Oh my God! The Gateau from the Chateau!" - and I love the payoff at the end, with Rene and the fire bucket. I prefer the early episodes with Hans too, but there's something about Captain Bertorelli as well; there's that great one where he shows up with his "crack Italian commando squad"...

Heh. Thanks. :-D I've just noticed the glaring mistake in the last sentence. I mean, understandable when you've got your brain in Allo Allo French accent mode, but I should have spotted it on at least one of the ten or so rereadings...

I like Captain Bertorelli, too, but I was young at the time and very much attached to Hans! "Flop!" (I mean, "'ler!") Poor Sam Kelly had an accident last year, or he'd finally have appeared in DW proper. :-(

(And, yes, the sand: "In memory of when the dear Kaiser was buried." Brilliant! There are so many really funny ones. The only stuff I don't like (well, some of this from v. distant memory) is the last series, when they recast about 3 main characters - very disappointing.

Of course, one of the joys of watching Doctor Who in retrospect is the distracting fact that General von Klinkerhoffen and Lt Gruber both turn up in Genesis of the Daleks.

Yes, they do, don't they? I think Hilary Minster is also in another one of the 70s ones in an equally small part, but I'm blanking on which one it is...maybe a Pertwee one?

I know. *Slaps self before any more ridiculous crossovers occur*

Hmm, I expect you're right. There are a lot of the Pertwee episodes I still haven't seen, so I can't say. (Not for any reason, just VHS/DVD availability etc!)

It's a long time since I've seen any 'Allo 'Allo!, but a lot of the details rang true.

I agree with you about the last series; the regenerated version of Flick was nowhere near as good as the original, and I seem to recall Helga thought so in-story as well.

The very last episode, when Helga and Gruber came back to Nouvion long after the end of the war, was actually kind of good, but I agree, the new Herr Flick wasn't a patch on the original. I didn't like the recast Captain Bertorelli much either.

The little tank! I don't know what Four would do in a situation like that; goof off to great effect, probably. As long as Lt Gruber got to sing "Mad About the Boy" to him, I think all would be fine...

Like I said, I've been rewatching with my Dad - we're not up to the end. I have a fuzzy memory of the last ep being quite good, so I suspect you're right. No, they shouldn't have messed with Richard Gibson and Gavin Richards.

I don't think I really am going to do an Allo Allo crossover. You'll have to!! ;-)

Thank you. My Dad's been getting the DVDs, so when I get home to visit, we watch a few more eps & we're just up to the beginning os S4, which probably explains a lot about this! It was for NYR on Yuletide, so someone wanted it.

Yes, he had a cunning reason for plastic surgery or something and Helga on being ordered to kiss him, was very much "It's not the same, Herr Flick." At least they did come up with a fairly amusing explanation for it!

"Can ve not shoot her just a little?"

Heeeeeee, that was fantastic! I haven't laughed so much since ages. Lovely that your recipient liked it and oh my, I think I even approved of the femslash.

I'm so glad you liked it. I have to say I got to the point with it where I was being driven mad by the accents, trying to get Crabtree's dialogue anything approaching like it is in the show and it ceased to be funny at all!!

Thanks. I really don't do femslash and the request was for an Edith story, preferably with Michelle, pref f/s but insanely plotted gen featuring the two would be okay. I got half way through and then thought: This is Allo Allo. Michelle is entirely likely to declare her love for Edith out of the blue as anything else that happened. Poor Michelle. I was watching the montage (above) and her face every time she has to say "Listen very carefully..." or, worse still, someone says it to her. :-)

And I haven't yet had a response from the recipient, although I have had a couple some from other kind people. So I am hoping that this time I actually managed to do what I was supposed to!!

Oh, for some reason I thought the recipient had commented... oh well I'm sure she'll love it!

I will have to check out the links above when I am not over my internet limit...
