"Don't mess with a man and his mannequin..."

Sorry for the slight spammage - the previous lot of icons were made mostly ages ago. These, um, well... I have no excuse, but 92 icons from the 1987 movie Mannequin. (A bonkers, tacky but joyful 1980s tale of true love, wacky time travel and window dressing, not forgetting the pop video montage in the middle... For those who don't know it, it's ( Read more... )

Clearly I've been in fandom too long - #52 sounds awfully rude!

52 IS awfully rude - I probably shouldn't have iconed it! That's exactly the sense in which it's said. It is one of the most bizzarre films ever! (Since everyone else only sees Emmy as a block of wood, they think Jonathan's a pervert, and, um... yeah.)

Well, he is only kissing her at that point, but that's [the character] Hollywood for you. (I'll have to see if I can find the clip!) But, yep. I, um... will have to find the clip!!! *coughs*

I think I've seen this once, years ago, but it does indeed look like the most 80s thing ever...

Look, there's the bloke out of Police Academy...playing a policeman... Gotta love typecasting. ;D

There are a lot more obvious candidates for the title, but I do feel that the sort of pop video parody in the middle really gives it the edge in the contest. :-D And it is a fairytale of the power of love and really good advertising. Or something... And once you throw in a cartoon wacky time-travelling intro with music by Belinda Carlisle and then finish up with Starship... Yeah.

My Dad taped it when my sister and I were teenagers, so we watched it to death, until the day he cruelly taped over it. Hmm. I've definitely seen him playing a policeman in something else, too. (It is very possible that I may have seen Police Academy, cos that's definitely the sort of thing my Dad would have watched.)

Yeah... Although, having said that, I saw The Secret of My Success with Michael J Fox in it on some channel the other week...and that's really pretty extremely 80s, actually. As is anything with Michael J Fox in it, kind of by definition.

Yeah, I think the original Police Academy is actually pretty passable, as 80s film comedies go, as far as I remember. It did have approximately sixty-seven increasingly inane sequels, however (I'm only exaggerating the numbers slightly :D). I have a particular memory of watching the one with the shark in it, whichever one that is, at some kid's house back in the day and thinking it was brilliant at the time. I wonder, if I saw it again today...? XD

 But does it have a pop video montage thingy?

I do remember watching (I think) one or two of the sequels, but evidently, my Dad recorded over them pretty quick, or me and my sister preferred things with magical shop window dummies, I dunno.

That is the danger, isn't it? Some things are just great, and some thing aren't? Mannequin is a bit of shock - it's bizarre and tacky, and actually much ruder in places than I ever noticed as a teen, but it's too busy being so happy and not caring about that, that criticism seems just irrelevant. And certainly daring to rewatch Dungeons & Dragons, Press Gang, and Maid Marian proved great, too. There are some things I would never dare even try with, though. I got the definite feeling childhood memories could be shattered into tiny pieces... :-D

This is a great example of a guilty pleasure movie. Meshach Taylor's OTP performance (with the best one-liners) is my favorite part.

It is, isn't it? It's totally bizarre, but great fun, and it never makes any claim to seriousness or whatever, which adds to the appeal. Hollywood is great, so are the OTT villains, Kim Cattrall sells the whole thing and Andrew McCarthy seems to be having so much fun they probably didn't need to pay him, so I don't know who I'd pick, but, yeah, Hollywood!

(And I can't help wondering now if anyone's ever written fanfic of Emmy's wacky time-travel adventures. Preferably crossed with DW meeting Leonardo da Vinci or something, but anyway... Probably not. Heh.)
