Yes, yes...Desmond has a keen eye. He feels people.
Desmond quickly replaced Locke as the island mystic, and since his only agenda is getting off the island and back to Pen (not wrestling power from one or the other, not confiscating everything worth anything), he can take the time to observe - a thing which, as you note, he is quite good at. It is Des, not Jack, that is a "people person"!
