The creative process--alive and flourishing in our kids

On Saturday, I spent the day down in Eugene watching my son's team and two other teams from our home education center compete in a Destination Imagination regional tournament.  If you haven't heard about DI, just know that it's an amazing venue for kids to get together in teams to work on specific challenges by dreaming, talking, creating, having ( Read more... )

I just heard about DI for the first time this weekend, and I absolutely MUST get my daughter to do it next year! I would have LOVED this when I was young. Did your son's team pick each other, or were they matched up by the organization, or what? It seems like such an amazing way to develop a sense of competence. There are far too few opportunities for that in the schools, IMO.

Six years. . . I moved every 2-3 years as a kid, so I can't even begin to wrap my head around that kind of continuity. That must be very comforting.

I just love that they're in dress clothes.

Do you have a video of the presentation?

Oh, I highly recommend it for your daughter. As far as I know, the organization doesn't match teams up. Most schools in our area have teams, but sometimes you have to search them out, or you could start one yourself! It's such a great program.

We didn't take video this round--they'll be competing at the state level in April and we'll film then.
Good luck with finding a team!

Oh, that's wonderful, Lorraine! I would have loved to have done something like this in HS. And I think it's fantastic that your son's team has been together so long and builds on so many different talents.

It is fun to watch them work together. So different than girls' teams. My daughter went through three different teams and there was always so much drama! And not always the good kind... But they always came up with amazing skits and art work.

I'm so glad he's had the opportunity to be a part of this. And it is wonderful to watch them grow and produce a more sophisticated solution to the challenge each year. Of course, I'm just a proud momma. :)

I love it! I wish MY kids had had this sort of education. Our school system is supposed to be very good--but I found it lacking in that creativity was never as important as test scores.

Uh oh, don't get me started on test scores vs. creativity... But I'm just glad we've been able to do this eclectic schooling for our kids with all the team experiences and gradeless learning. It's been such a gratifying journey all around (though it hasn't been without it's difficulties!)

So cool. I wish I'd found such a program for my kids when they were in school.
