I usually go to Destin... there's a Hampton Inn motel my family always stayed at, that's just a few minutes walk from the beach. And from a restaurant called The Back Porch-- we always had to eat there! :)
After we graduated, a friend of mine took me with her to Orange Beach. Her family had access to a condo there, so we got to stay for most of a week for free. It was really quite lovely, and the pace there is really slow.
If you go to Orange Beach, might you drive through Montgomery? Maybe you could stop off for a few minutes for a cheap lunch or something! I'd love to see you guys. :) Whenever you do go.
The Gulf Shores/Orange Beach area is nice (it's not too far from where I used to live.)
How important is staying on the beach itself to you? There are several nice towns (Daphne, Fairhope, Foley) which may be cheaper than the beach itself and the travel time didn't seem too insane (I used to live about 45 minutes away in Daphne.) The worst crowds always seemed to be around Spring Break, not in the summer though...
I like Ormond Beach in FL, but that may be a bit out of your way... I'd say maybe check Craigslist for vacation rentals somewhere near you? You can find grrreat deals that way. Ah, the beach! I wish I were there RIGHT NOW.
