Washington State Senate Bill 5104

I haven't posted in a while cause I've been quite busy as of late. I felt that this merited a quick post though. Apparently, there are those in Olympia who feel that we need an income tax in addition to our current list.

Oh like you have two jobs or something;)

That sure is a lot of taxes the government sure wants to make sure they have enough money to pay all the politicians.

Oh and maybe fix a sidewalk or two.

To be fair, I think a lot of that goes back to the people in one form or another. However, its a law of diminishing returns. I have yet to have someone show me, purely in fiscal terms, where having the government do a project has saved money vs. the free market. That isn't to say that from time to time there are intangibles that make it worthwhile for the government to do it, I just don't think those circumstances come along all that often.

I think it was last year that Olympia had the olympia parks and rec do some projects that they normally contracted out and they actually saved quite a bit of money.

but thats one out of alot.

It would be nice to to see a break down to where all the money has gone and if it would be cheaper for the state or to hire an outside agency to take care of it.

I've worked for state, and I've worked for large corporations. In those kind of situations, you typically had people who just weren't doing their job and so they "save" because they were paying the salary anyway, they just got work out of them. What would have to happen for comparison is to take a project that government doesn't typically do, look at the money they allocate to it, then compare it with a private contractor for the same job. For instance, the overpass in dupont. Correct me if I'm wrong, but that was done privately (via Intel) and came in ahead of schedule and under budget, a budget that I was told was already substantially lower than the estimated cost for the state to do it.

To be clear, I know several people that I believe are hard workers and that are always busy at the state. But I know a lot more that were always walking around outside, taking smoke and coffee breaks, and generally wasting time.
